At first I thought the friend was Ron, but I now I think it's Draco. When he called Harry "Potter", I realized it couldn't be Ron. Ron has never called Harry "Potter". And since Harry's reply was "Back to 'Potter' again I see" I can conclude that this was not the first time his friend has called him by his surname.
And so my final answer is that it was Draco.

Great story, I love how you addressed that the power he knew not was death. Kind of morbid, but fitting. I'm thinking the friend isn't Ron because it says back to Potter are we, and probably not my second guess of Snape because of the age gap, so I'm going to guess Draco. Anyways wonderful job ^_^
