I remember this story from a long time ago, before I got an account here to properly review... It's funny, because I was thinking about it, but couldn't remember where it was, and here I am now.
I've always liked this rendition of Adventure 2's ending. It seems more...real to me; suffice it to say that the actual ending scene did not sit well with me. The interactions between Knuckles and Shadow are always interesting...this story is made even more compelling since Shadow isn't really saying/doing anything in it. The bridge to Sonic Heroes (and by extension, The Thousand) is a nice touch there at the end.
All in all, this is a great story; thank you very much for sharing it with those of us on Fanfiction.

I can understand why you removed Amy from the continuity - she too would grieve and nullify your thesis that “only Knuckles understands what Shadow sacrificed.”

The mechanics of your writing are great; it’s the concept I don’t agree with. Even though Sonic bids a mournful adieu aboard ARK (alone, with no one to impress), even though Knuckles so obsessively places heritage and duty above all others; even though Shadow and Knuckles never truly met or interacted during SA2, you assume that he out of all these people would grieve Shadow’s loss the most.

_Fire Daemon?_ Huh, I guess I missed the Knuckles fic that would explain what this was, besides an odd sort of hallucinatory metaphor. From reading ‘Guardian’s Mistake’, I get the feeling you have a lot of unspoken (unwritten?) back-story to your very original take on the Sonicverse.

I realize that no (well-written) character can be one emotion at all times. They must exist in many flowing states of existence. I see this story as a snapshot of Knuckles in his seldom-seen vulnerability. But I really couldn’t find strength in the proposed emotional attachments tugging the echidna’s heartstrings. It’s an interesting claim, but the premises leading to your conclusion don’t quite connect in my mind. I haven’t read “The Thousand” yet; maybe I need to read more of your continuity to fully understand this story.
