deaka 2009-10-28 . chapter 8Many kudos for this story! To take a fictional universe like either one of these and translate it into something with real emotional resonance is challenging at best, but you've managed to do so for not one but both, and to pull it off successfully while remaining true to the dialogue and characterisation in each universe... it's an impressive feat.
All of the characters are very sympathetic (even Blackadder, which is no mean accomplishment!) but I was particularly struck by Bertie and Jeeves, because as much as I love Wodehouse, Bertie frustrates me often with how difficult he makes everything for himself in the books. Whereas here he's so bedazzled and utterly defenceless, the poor lamb, that you just want Jeeves to come and make things right ASAP. And Bertie's voice is absolutely perfect.
The insanity angle was a clever touch, also -- half of Bertie's acquaintances must through various misunderstandings be under the impression that he's unstable, so it makes a perverse sort of sense that Blackadder took that line of argument.
I could go on and on, but suffice to say: fantastic work. This is exactly what fan fiction should aspire to be. :D |
AppleA 2008-08-31 . chapter 8I love it. I love it so much.
NO ONE PERSON SOULD BE THAT TALENTED AT WRITING SUCH AN AWE-INSPIRING STORY. XD |
Too lazy to log in 2008-07-21 . chapter 7 Love. Pure absolute love. I always liked stories that tiptoed that thin line between tragedy and comedy, and you've done it perfectly.
By the by, you've also done one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes fan fiction stories, the one about Watson in the hospital? Also brilliant.
I don't suppose theres any chance of you making more Blackadder stories? Yes, yes? Please? |
 MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-16 . chapter 8Nice!! ^_^ |
MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-16 . chapter 7Bertie's innocence is what makes him him. ^_^
But Blackadder's not so mean after all? Even IF he says he is. Isby reminds me of whatsherface in Blackadder the Third.
Love Blackadder's dialogue here, btw. |
MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-16 . chapter 6It's kind of sad, this, actually. Apart from the really long sentences, it really makes me feel sorry for Baldrick, always expecting to be hit and all. |
 MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-16 . chapter 5Oy VEY. >.<
I think the "yep" and "nope" thing is a bit off, too modern.
Flasheart reference. ;) |
MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-10 . chapter 2Well, definate LOLage to the end, but gee, Blackadder's being mercenary. Poor Bertie. It makes you wonder what he was like before Jeeves and busy having his socks stolen. |
MoonlitPuddle 2008-06-10 . chapter 1*drools noisily and wetly over this fic*
Is there any Jeeves and Wooster fanfic out there? This is the first I've seen, and, if I may use the phrase gushingly enough, you do it *so* well.
Dialogue is perfect. |
B 2008-02-23 . chapter 1 This is stunning. All four major characters are just about spot on, and the dialogue is crisp and laugh-out-loud funny. Well done. |
sor_bet 2007-11-12 . chapter 3 Over here via a fic search response on indeedsir (lj), and I'm enjoying this so much! Well, I'm not enjoying how horrible Blackadder is to Baldrick, and I haven't seen enoughs shows to realize that it's canon and that it shouldn't upset me. But I'm hoping there will be happiness at the end for those who deserve it and comeuppance for those who deserve that. :-)
"Mr. Blackadder began to twirl the poker in a careless and debonair manner."
It's lines like that one that make me think this isn't fanfic at all, but some sort of genius collaboration between the creators. Looking forward to the rest of the fic! |
Dylan 2007-02-26 . chapter 8This has been... Excellent. Just excellent. I don't even know what to say. I've been reading fan fic for years and years now, getting on to at least seven or so, and seriously, this was one of the most creative, sensitive, interesting things ever. I'm so glad, just reading it, that I'm intimate with both Jeeves & Wooster and Blackadder enough to get it. If I weren't, I'd be missing out.
And I have thought often of what you said at the beginning the story, that it is a question, whether characters like Bertie and Edmund B can be taken out of their comedic context and stand on their own as characters who make choices based on internal thought patterns, not only an aim by their author for them to be funny... And I agree with you in throwing my lot in with those who say that they exist separate of their circumstances, that they are personalities in their own right. Otherwise, I think, I'd feel let down, and the fact that this plot completely worked for me, darkness and moments of character revelation and all, makes me know it can be done well, when they're taken out of the usual rules of their universes.
But only if done by someone as sharp as you.
I mean, seriously now, gah, the scene with Baldrick going to the window and looking out at Blackadder and *knowing* it was him just by the slant of his shoulders and head... Stop it now, that's just too good. Especially because it never seems unbelievable. I bought it hook, line and sinker, and I'm one of those people who finds it extremely difficult to go along with a story that I feel is oversentimentalizing, etc., for no reason. But this was just It.
And it just really reassures me, in general, to know that there are people out there, like you, who write so well...and who also watch shows the way I do. Because, I don't know if you ever have this happen, but sometimes I feel alone in treasuring how light and funny and hilarious they can be, but also knowing, secretly, that this sort of story is in them as well. I hope you know what I mean.
Just spiffing. |
derien 2007-02-09 . chapter 8 I amend my previous statement. It's not just Blackadder's voice you have an amazing grasp of, it's all of them. I was a bit iffy on Baldrick's for a while, but then I was won over. His not believing that Blackadder would come back, but saying it for Bertie's sake, and then Blackadder actually doing so because he really doesn't want to be without Baldrick is so damned sweet. And true to the show. :) That affection he has for Baldrick, underneath all the abuse, and the doing the right thing in the end, is all that makes him bearable.
And of course Jeeves would remove the bullets - hurrah! |
derien 2007-02-07 . chapter 2 I'm only partway through Ch 2, but when I hit this line - "Stupid of me to expect something reasonable out of your mouth, unless it should happen to be another one of your teeth realizing it’s only hope is to evacuate the area." - I discovered that I had an overwhelming need to compliment your ability to do Blackadder dialogue! |
innocentsmith 2007-02-04 . chapter 8This story made me ridiculously happy. It's not quite Wodehouse and not quite Blackadder, but it contains some of the best elements of both, and it gives a wonderful new perspective on both by showing both sets of characters through each other's eyes. I laughed like hell when Isby made her comment about having made Madeline Bassett roll her eyes. And I wibbled when Jeeves and Bertie were reunited.
Fabulous job! |
