abuseExcellent story so far.

Extremely well written overall and you've once again managed to capture the characters' personalities, and quirks perfectly while simultaneously allowing them to grow and change subtly to adapt to the new story.

Again top notch work, that we've all come to expect and look forward to.

My only complaint was that the first couple of chapters felt,... rushed. At least in terms of the whole John Daria romance. I think the story would have been better served with a slightly slower pace in that regard, even more so the living arrangement/custody portion. But the pace smoothed out nicely as the story progressed.

I practically inhaled chapters of this one. Finding myself absorbed in the nostalgia of watching the original episodes for the first time with a fresh perspective.

Eagerly awaiting the next installment and wondering how far this AU is going to go :)

abuseIt's always interesting to ask the question "What If... ?" This is a solid exploration of an alternate past leading toward a happier future for all the characters of the series.

Keep up the good work.

abuseI loved the homage to the scene in the laundry room from chapter one. And the fact that they actually DID make out in there this time.

Overall this was a good chapter, but I noticed a number of glaring grammer errors. You seemed to miss out ""'s for peoples speech a number of times. Not to criticise, but a bit more proof reading is called for I think.

Looking forward to the next chapter, as always.

abuseAs Helen Morgendorffer was a flower child who went very professional, this leatest divergence is very vital to her development in the John Lane universe, and in her relationship with Daria.

I, personally, can see either the total inversion motif or that burning coal of activism in Helen.

Total inversion to a cold uberYuppie is easily explained. Far from "selling out", snapping the other way when the Age of Aquarius fell into bloody chaos is a natural and in many cases likely backlash. You know that tune: when a God proves to have flaws, many turn apostate.

The more difficult and intriguing path is turning very professional in order to truly change the system from within, knowing even as you do that you will NEVER see the bright youthful dream, but a more pragmatic change. Not least because of changes to your worldview inevitably accruing along the way. To better understand my meaning on this, go to an oldies station and listen to "Doctor, My Eyes", the lyrics to which I hereby append:

~~

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears
Without crying;
Now I want to understand.
I have done all that I could
To see the evil, and the good,
Without hiding;
You must help me if you can!

Doctor, my eyes--
Tell me what is wrong!
Was I unwise
To leave them open for so long?

'Cause I have wandered through this world
And, as each moment has unfurled,
I've been waiting
To awaken from these dreams.
People go just where they will;
I never noticed them until
I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems!

Doctor, my eyes--
Tell me what you see.
I hear their cries--
Just say if it's too late for me.

Doctor, my eyes
Cannot see the sky;
Is this the price--
For having learned how not to cry?

abuseI continue to be impressed with the character development that is occurring in this story. It's almost become sad how Brittney is still trying to get Kevin to be more attentive in their relationship, but I continue to enjoy your portrayal of her development, as well as the other characters. I'm glad as well that Kevin is also beginning to show development. That he wants to avoid being like Tommy Sherman shows some definite mental and social growth on his part.
As I've said before, I am very much enjoying Quinn's support of John and Daria's relationship. Her logic in regards to social situations is both entertaining and engaging. Her logic in this chapter of John keeping Daria off the market was quite interesting to read. And in a previous chapter when she referred to the two of them as popular outcasts was hilarious yet also peaked my interest.
I'm also glad to see members of the fashion club showing increased maturity as well. I don't see much of that in Sandi, but I think that Quinn's own growth has been a positive influence on Tiffany and especially for Stacy.
To be completely honest, I have enjoyed this story so much that I couldn't help but reread it after I finished the first 33 chapters. The fact that you posted chapter 34 right as I finished rereading made my day. I eagerly await more of the story. Expect to hear from me again soon. Thank you for taking the time to write not only such an expansive story, but also to put such a high level of quality into your work.

abuseDaria and John bonding with Kevin and Brittney? Never thought I'd see the day that happened. Kinda nice though :)

Pretty good chapter, though its a shame there was nothing of the mall in this chapter, which made the episode its from so funny. I guess without Tom in the mix, that part of the story wouldnt have worked as well.

I dont understand the last line. What does "Do you have any advice on tilting at windmills?" mean?

abuseI knew I forgot something in my last review. In regards to character growth, I've been nothing but impressed with your interpretation of Quinn. As I said before, the way she acted after the wedding was very sweet. And how she acted when she found John and Daria asleep on the couch, and during the camping trip showed an increased maturity in her character that was frequently lacking in the series.

This story has so many enjoyable aspects that I never know what to say other than that I'm enjoying it.

abuseIt's nice to once again see characters breaking out of their molds. For Brittany it was good to see that she is smarter than she looks (though I don't hold out much hope for Kevin). And for Jodie and Mack it was refreshing to see them cut loose a bit, from what I remember of the series, they were always very controlled.

I'm curious how much of Brittany's backstory is canonical. Specifically the karate and the poems. It adds a inspiring level of depth to her character, and I hope that is further explored in later chapters.

abuseThe fight scene was impressive, I'm sure it was difficult to write but you did an excellent job of conveying both John and Daria's present feelings as well as their pent-up frustrations. I'm glad to see their relationship is developing further, without automatically leaping to physical intimacy. It's nice that they're able to find new levels of emotional intimacy instead.

abuseI've been looking forward to Daria's writing assignment since I started reading the story. That was one of my favorite episodes from the series, and I was eager to see how you adapted it. Admittedly, I would have liked to see Daria and John with some kids of their own. But you covered that in two ways, one with Quinn's three kids. But more than that, I think that Daria would know it would just worry her mother further.

I'm also enjoying how fully integrated John has become into the family. Helen, Jake and Quinn clearly all care about him as much as Daria does (in different ways of course.) The frequent references to John being one of their kids is really nice to see in Helen and Jake, I think the added responsibility has really helped both of them break out of some of their canonically negative character traits. The same goes for Quinn, I feel that she has grown a great deal past her canonical self. I was really touched by what she said after the wedding, it was funny that the deal she wanted was for John to "make it happen" but it was also very sweet of her.

This was also a very romantic way for Daria and John to confess their feelings. As a writer as well, I know how difficult it can be to ask someone to read your work, particularly when you care what that person thinks. It was a very Daria-type way to show John how she felt about him. It was also entertaining because in the series Jane never got to read the story.
