MireiLovett1846 2009-11-11 . chapter 1This is brilliant! You've written Iroh perfectly! He never really does get many fics, does he?
I particularly liked the scene at dinner, just before Iroh slipped the sedative into the tea. I imagine he must have to tune Zuko out after a while, for his own sanity's sake... ;]

janedoe401 2008-12-28 . chapter 3Ah...dear Booter-Freak-sama, you are but oh so cruel to Zuko, neh?
Hohohohoho...but then again, isn't that what most us love to do. Torment our favorite character? |
SpeakUpAndFaceTheMusic 2008-12-01 . chapter 1hahaha. This is really really good. I've been looking for a good Zuko and Iroh fic, awesome! I have to say, though, Iroh is way to unlucky...poor chap. Zuko was funny when he's irritable. This was hilarious and had enough action too! Awesome! |
IrisedLuna 2008-09-13 . chapter 1With all his experience, I don't think Iroh is too hesitant about using trickery when he feels it's necessary. And I think you've captured that perfectly. Gorgeous prose and subtle humor are really, really good points about this chapter! |
wakingfire 2008-07-12 . chapter 1Haha just Iroh's luck! Great story. Best Iroh I've seen in fiction! |

Scooz 2007-10-05 . chapter 3The infamous booter-freak is an artist and a writer? o.O You suck XD
Anyway, great job on the fanfic. You're right, there are too many Zuko fic, something I am even guilty of, and it's refreshing to read something like this after sifting through a sea of fangirling obsessive Zuko fanfics, lol. Even better, you did in the first person p.o.v. so we get an intimate look at Iroh, which seems to be a taboo with a lot of writers.
Loved the ending how the crew stuck up for Uncle Iroh, lol. Very cute. It's not like Uncle Iroh was conspiring so Zuko couldn't capture the Avatar, hehe, he was just trying to help. The fight scene was also interesting, especially between Uncle and Aang. I think you portrayed Uncle's clever yet goofy and playful nature very well in this fanfic.
Props for drugging Zuko's tea. It's about time Uncle shut him up for alittle while XD The boy complains way too much, lol. |
Marshall Turner 2007-09-29 . chapter 3My rating (out of four): Four stars
“Iroh’s Folly” is the first “Avatar” fanfiction to totally fit my idea of what a great fanfic should be: original but faithful, and very well written. This story is both of those things, but it’s also funny, suspenseful, and, most importantly, human.
I was surprised by how simple the story was. Iroh simply wants Zuko to get some sleep, and his desperate measures have unfortunate consequences. The fun is in observing Iroh’s methods and, when one of them finally works, it comes at the worst of times. The Avatar is very close, but Zuko has been knocked out (Iroh drugged Zuko’s tea, which works much better than he thought it would), so Iroh decides to take him on alone.
The action scene is the best I’ve seen in an “Avatar” fanfiction. It’s not plagued by too much or too little description, which almost always kills a potentially cool fight. The scene is pretty creative; I especially liked how Iroh separates Aang from his staff. The most important thing about this scene is that it never loses sight of the characters, particularly Iroh, and still injects a fair amount of humanity into what’s essential a typical battle.
The key to the success of this fanfiction is Iroh. Willing to break away from conventional, the author, Booter-Freak, made Iroh the main character and has the story told from his point-of-view. Iroh is presented extremely well, and I compliment the author for making his motivation so commonplace: the old man just wants his nephew to get some rest. Any responsible adult can connect with that. Iroh’s conflict also makes him somewhat sympathetic in the action scene; I was almost hoping he’d win his fight with Aang, but that would go against the structure of the show, which “Iroh’s Folly” captures so strongly. Apart from his role in the plot, Iroh is a funny character to observe. His insight is often times amazing.
What’s truly surprising about the story is that you read it and you think, “This would make a great episode on the show.” It certainly would, which is about the highest praise you can give to a fanfiction. You can say that it exceeds expectations, but doesn’t at the same time.
Which leads to the conclusion: Zuko wakes up and is told nothing of Iroh’s actions in the two previous chapters. However, Zuko seems to know that something’s not right, and he questions Iroh and the men who are aboard. What happens here I will not reveal, but it is the best portion of the story.
This makes me want to read more Iroh stories, although he is the kind of character that takes time and attention to detail to write well. If I’m not able to find one that’s good, I’m at least glad I read “Iroh’s Folly,” one of the better fanfictions on this site. |
Anawey 2007-09-10 . chapter 3Heh, Iroh really is crafty. I like this. |
The.Truth.Beneath.The.Rose 2007-08-10 . chapter 3Woa... Iroh is the best character of Avatar. My favorite, obviously... Well, i liked the fic, the original idea! hahaha... Iroh gave Zuko a drugtea! hahaha... hilarious. And yeah, we all knew Iroh would win... why?... because He's IROH! hahaha... goes to my faves. |
