Actually, "fourth wall" comes from theater. It's the "wall" between the audience and the stage. It's just been adapted for ff purposes.

Coincidentially, that's the way LotR would have been if /I/ owned it...except Eowyn would have been given a sporting chance at Aragorn (or whatever name you prefer) and there would also be random flying monkeys attacking the Fellowship when I was in an arbitrary mood.
