But maybe the characterization for Itachi is off just the littlest bit? He always seemed to me the kind of guy who'd happily complete missions to become stronger, not the type who would go out of his way to cause problems. But with Sasuke involved, maybe his mission was to enrage Sauske to the point of trying to kill him (actually, this seems like something he could do for entertainment...creepy!).
