How magnanimous of Dumbledore to apologize for condoning and excusing the bullying and allowing Lupin to abuse his prefect-status! Especially since he doesn't even mean it and feels he did nothing wrong, negating any value the gesture might have had otherwise. And really, it was just a little murder-attempt, how dare Severus to feel outraged - boys will be boys, eh? And while we're all equals here the Griffindors are just a bit more equal... If this was his attitude in canon too (and it seems so from the books) it's no wonder that a disgusted teenage Severus was feeling betrayed and choose the other alternative.

Bellatrix is (weirdly, since I too thought it would be Andromeda with daughter Tonks already being around 22 during OotP) the oldest of the sisters and she was a 7th year when Severus started Hogwarts! So by now she'd probably already be married to Rodolphus for some years and kneedeep into Voldemort-worship... And Andromeda also must have left school already for some time - otherwise there's no way Tonks could have finished school and three years of Auror-training in OotP.

Not sure about Tonks sen being an animagus but since it's not impossible from canon-info go for it. It would be a novel to see Tonks metamorphmagus-ability coming from the male muggleborn side of the family instead of the Blacks.

I also find the notion the animagi are truly rare laughable. I know McGonagall said something like this but she refered to the fact that "there were only 7 REGISTERED animagi in one century". If the ability is really rare there's no way that 3 out of 3 (!) students (PPW) could have achieved it - and without guidance too. The statistical possibility goes beyond 1 to a few millions. We too have Rita Skeeter and of the 5 known Animagi in canon 4 are NOT registered: meaning that it's probably rare for wizards to register themselves with the Ministry which I think realistic seeing what an excentric, individualistic and not very lawabiding bunch wizardkind is. And there might be several wizards who managed the transformation only to find their animal-form totally useless for their purposes (like finding out you're a blind deepsea fish able to exist only 600m under water _) and thus not using it later, regarding it as a waste...

I can see Lucius courting the brilliant young nobody in just this way ... and Voldemort was just an ambitious and ruthless politician at this stage in the game.
