Your verb tenses were awkward... using present tense instead of past gave it an odd feeling.

"The people are..." instead of "The people were..."

You should not put true quotation marks around thoughts, "like this", it will be confused for speech. 'Single quotes' would be better suited.

If there are English equivilents to a Japanese expression, the English should be used. For a non-speaking Japanese person it is a hassle to have to either skip the line of dialogue or go to the bottom where there may or may not be a key.
