L'Ael-Inire 2009-09-23 . chapter 1I liked this very much. It seemed very true to Valjean's character, and I was always quietly put off that all he really said about Javert's death in the book was basically: "Well, **, I guess he WAS nuts."
But that's Hugo for you--giving you lots of little pieces and saving the rest for himself. For such a long book, it seems at times that he didn't write much at all, doesn't it?
But this was a perfect balance--not too indifferent to betray Valjean's good-hearted nature, but not too worked up to make it seem as if he cared any more particularly for the inspector than the inspector did for him. Although, I did like the last bit about him not crumpling up the paper, not quite being able to brush it off his mind as perhaps he would like to.

Marionette Javert Edwards 2009-04-27 . chapter 1I love the last two paragraphs, truly excellent. |
 Cecilia Carlton 2009-01-14 . chapter 1Oh! I liked this very much. =) |
 A. Nonny Muss 2007-05-19 . chapter 1 This was beautiful. I like Valjean's reaction to Javert's death, especially the last two paragraphs.
As far as your reasoning about Javert's motives, I don't think that you went as deeply as you could have. There is so much to Javert, and his motives for being so dedicated to his job are tied in to his personal involvement in Valjean's case and, of course, his eventual suicide. Javert believes himself to be acting justly, but he does not understand mercy and forgiveness. He maintains his character by holding himself to the same standards against which he measures others. It was only after his "system" had be skewed that he jumped into the Seine. Valjean had shown mercy, and acted forgiving. Javert, whose parents had been less than honorable, believed people unable to change, or even unable to be capable of honorable traits. But I digress.
For this piece, it was not necessary to go into such depth, mostly because this fic focuses on Valjean, and all conclusions drawn are his own musings. Anyway, very well done. |
 mildetryth 2007-04-19 . chapter 1Hmm. Interesting. |
Leibchen 2006-02-01 . chapter 1Veery nice. So no one except his own prey is left to mourn Javert, if that's even the right verb. Now here's a plot bunny I haven't seen before. Kudos to you! |
 Linzy 2005-11-13 . chapter 1Aptly titled. I like. |
Idril Silmaril 2005-10-05 . chapter 1I love this fic. Nobody in my whole life understands how much I love Javert, he is a very fascinating character (although I love Valjean equally) Very nice job. |
Javerts-Wench 2005-09-05 . chapter 1very good. its a clever idea to write about valjeans thoughts of Javert's suicide. it sums up javert's personality really quickly but detailed! |
ghilliekitten 2005-09-01 . chapter 1This is so cool! I never really thought of Javert in good terms before, but there's gotta be a first time for evreything. and I agree - dying alone must be horrible. |
LesMisLoony 2005-09-01 . chapter 1Oh my gosh she lives!
Hurrah, this is spectacular! And I love the idea of Valjean pondering Javert's death... Hugo never really says that he knew of it.
Please don't leave us again, O Grapefruit Queen. |
Ithilmir 2005-08-31 . chapter 1Very sweet. Am very fond of the Javert-dark angel comparison; very popular with me at the moment :) I also like Valjean's attempts to work out exactly *when* Javert went mad. Rather interesting string of thoughts.
Nice piece. |
La Pamplemousse 2005-08-30 . chapter 1Anoney Mouse, please don't review my work anymore. |

ArgentineRose 2005-08-30 . chapter 1 Oh how terribly sad. For both of them. I mean, if someone as consistant as Javert can suprise him, then what certainty can poor Valjean cling to?
I especially liked the bit about the |
