I started with Flight a long time ago - and bookmarked Preflight to read it 'sometime' - well sometime has been the last few days.
Love the stories in general.
I really had to say something to show love for the statement Derik made in this chapter, both about how DEs are and his lesson on fighting. HP stories can be split into ones that take Death Eaters seriously as terrorists, and those who pretend that the wizarding world has cuddly Disney type villains who mostly insult people, occasionally torture, once in a while kill, but they're (almost) all regular people underneath - except for the one obligatory pure psycho (Voldie) who will be killed but we're sorry for him anyhow because his bad childhood turned him into a pumpkin.
(cough) anyhow, it seems really hard for people to write stories where there are real terrorists / evil DEs without losing how to write about children, young adults, and their mindset. It is OK for kids not to get evil, be able to handle evil, and mess up when they're dealing with evil. And real life too. Just that people who want to write about real life don't always seem to be able to write about how to handle encountering real life when you're a kid. (JKR didn't help by presenting a strategy which seems to be 'wait for the Leader to give you a handful of doodads and they'll fix everything'. Actually, that is a very bad strategy. So...)
I really like the way Derik is teaching his class, how he handled the key characters from Neville to Theo to Harry (and Parvati and etc., but the Guys always take being able to fight so seriously...)
I broke my leg in september and I had a lot of laying on the couch time so I reread flight and preflight. I have them both saved on my computer and stumbled across them while I was cleaning out old files. I had forgotten how much I LOVE the stories. The characters as you have written them, and all their complex histories and stories, have manage to overshadow the characters in the oirginal books. They are all so complex and vivid. It seems like rowling made an outline and you filled in the rest for her. Just wanted to stop by and let you know that someone is still reading (and rereading, and rereading, and rereading) enthusiastically.
I absolutely love this story. And Flight. I read Flight way back before you'd written PreFlight and I decided it was finally time to read PreFlight. I love it just as much as I love Flight. Both stories are bar none my favorite HP fics I've ever read. I just hope that whenever you finish PreFlight, you finish Flight after. I'd die if Flight never got finished. I don't care how long it takes. :)
One the one hand, I think you show some promise as a writer because your plot development is quite good. There's lots going on to keep your attention and such which makes it an interesting read.
But on the other hand this story really annoys me. LEGILIMENCY is spelled like that, not LIGILIMENCY ... it's not difficult to spell it correctly. And the first few times you mention Snape's wife you wrote KATHRYN ... but then I noticed in the last chapter you spelt it KATHERIN .. it's your own origonal character and you can't spell it's name right? It's the attention to detail in this story that lets me down ... i'll be enjoying a chapter and see a blatant error like that and it just annoys me really.
I hope you take this as it is meant, as constructive criticism, as I think if you worked on your consistancy and little things like that you could improve tenfold.
This is the longest fanfic I've read. Love it! But now I've got tons of homework now cause I put it off to read this. Haha. You know cause in flight there's no Derik? Could you like make it that he goes somewhere then comes back later in flight? I love him! Haha. And could you add more Blaise and Draco stuff in it? And has the demon came yet?
Oh wow! The level of detail is incredible in this story! At first I was doubtful I would be able to read with complete understanding since I have yet to read Flight. I love how all the plots and characters weave perfectly around each other. I can't wait to read more! Best Wishes! :D
Devastated at the moment that there isn't any more to read, and wondering what'll happen when you finally get back to Flight. You've changed so much of the original story that just looking at it right now, I feel something different with it. You've fleshed out the characters so well that I'm simply unable to process anything other than how amazing this story is. I've been following it (and Flight) since it was near the beginning, so I'm just going to sit here, twiddle my thumbs, and wait for the next amazing chapter.
I hope that Derik and Simon will end up together, though... it makes me happy to know that the poor guy will have someone in the end. The bit at the end of this chapter where Eli cuddled up with them warmed my heart; it was probably something he did with his father and Hutchins, since you've mentioned his father was gay. The one thing that struck me odd about this chapter was the mention of Derik having two children when I'm pretty sure you'd written previously that he didn't have any at all. Then again, it's been a while since I read the earlier chapters. Also, are you ever going to mention what Simon is? I don't recall him off the top of my head from Flight, if he was in it...
Bella's love for Jonathan breaks my heart and makes me want to hit her at the same time. I don't understand how she can kill and maim muggles if she is so in love with one, and willing to carry his child. Still, that scene a few chapters ago literally had me crying. I felt for Bella, and didn't want to feel for her.
Same thing for Lucius; actually, I was curious if he was telling the truth about what his father did, especially since Snape mentioned that Lucius was a conniving bastard who would twist words and use anything (including lies about his own molestation) to get Derik to open up so he could abuse his trust more.
Snape and Hermione make me sad, but also angry; they want to be together, can't be together, want to be together-argh. I understand in a few weeks, she'll move on to Harry-Pax, but still, it's beginning to drive me a little mad. Also, is she pregnant already? I can't remember everything about Flight, but I could have swore Snape knocked her up a while before.
Lavender having Harry's baby is a bit confusing, as well... Is she going to have a little accident?
Litty makes me want to punch small puppies. What she's done to Theo is absolutely heart-breaking. I understand what he did was wrong in some ways, but her way of exacting revenge isn't cute. I really want her to get a little lesson in life. As for Theo, poor guy needs to get laid more often. Also, his eyes changing colors worries me, because what if it's a genetic disorder of some kind that's going to hurt him? He's a good boy, and I know he makes it to Flight, but still... I hope he doesn't have any issues.
Draco needs to sleep. I know he won't until later, when he and Ginny finally get together, but still...
Pansy makes me smile, and I love her very much. Even though she's been missing a lot recently... I hope you put more of her character in the coming chapter. I miss her Snape-snark.
Ron's love for Harry and confusion and anger about Litty just makes me sad. I know, in a matter of months he'll have Blaise, but... It's hard watching what he's going through.
Tish is boning the sweet angel-boy. I hope this doesn't end with him getting hurt... Also, he and Dusty need to be the ones who kill Lucius in the end.
Marion deserves as many romps in the sack as she can get! Poor lady; I hope that she realizes she's beautiful and deserves love.
Thomas and Olivia make me happy as well, she'll have her fun with him. Though, I hope he isn't too heartbroken when Ginny says no...
Ben... I love Ben, hate Benjamin. Also, love Goyle. Poor man. I hope he and his twins and wife are safe. They deserve protection.
Missing Forester a lot... as well as our favorite doubles.
Adrian should get shot in the head.
I wish I could continue blabbering, but my brain is mush and I have uni in the morning. Please, I hope this rather obnoxiously long review puts you in the mood for writing, because a new chapter would be so fantastic and amazing.
This is bloody fantastic! Love it to bits. Wondering, what happened to Jimmy? And did Narcissa die or something? Can't wait till the next chapter! And my emails so could you send me preflight and flight of the thermals so I can read ofline? And how many more chapters will it be before you've finished this story?
I've read this once before, and I loved this even more the second time! I think the first time, it ended just after Derik thought Eli died in the fire. I love what you've got so far and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment! *grins*
Wow I haven't reviewed in a long time (I always forget my ff password sigh) but I can't wait to read to res! Hope you update soon this summer would just suck without a new update.
Put off by the Theo/Blaise scene? I absolutely loved it. Theo's one of my favorite characters. I really hope there's a chapter up soon, I feel like there's still so much you have to write so it will be forever before this is finished, if it is. But I love it reguardless. Read this and flight probably 4 times each, give or take a few times lol. The first time I read it I remember getting annoyed at Deriks character, but I have fallen in love with him now that I didn't skip his scenes. I love the little people you create, it just brings everything together. Btw my FAVORITE scenes you wrote are when Hermione first kissed Snape in the supply closet and she was all pissy with him, then when she stradled him after she got doused with the potion, and OMG can't forget when he took her into the supply closet and basically raped her! (not that she didn't want it) lol. I also LOVE Freya, I love to see how you will be incorporating these characters into flight, btw where's Goyle? I miss him :(.
Well, it's official. You've created a villain that's even worse than Voldemort, and snake-face isn't even dead yet. Seriously, good job, both Cornfoot's make my skin crawl, but Adrian is exceptionally disgusting.
In fact, this whole fanfic is pretty awful-not in the "Oh god, I can't stand how poorly written and stupid this piece of drivel is" but more in a "this makes my soul hurt" kind of way.
The Hermione-Snape interactions are delicious though, and I LOVE how you portray the Slytherins. If I attended Hogwarts, I'd definitely try to get in that House. Don't know if Snape would be all that accepting of all the sex that seems to go on though. His character (in the books and movies and such) seems to me to be more the "if I can't get some, than no one else is gonna get any either" type.
Also WTF is up with Harry being a rapist? I know I'm bringing it up a little late, and him shagging Litty in a hallway happened like, ten chapters a go, but it's been bugging me. It just came straight outta the blue, so I was wondering if it was just pointless out-of-character rape or if it had something to do with the plot later. Course, I should probably just keep reading to find out, but I couldn't resist bringing it up. There is something seriously wrong with that boy's head. But I guess growing up with the Dursleys might do that. They're all screwed, though, since he has to save the world and all.
Hi, It seems unfair that I can read in three days what you have worked on for over five years. It is a monumental piece of work. I really liked your original characters, as well as the way you built the minor characters from canon. You excel with extreme nasties...just made me want to bash them. You have a wonderful way with magical creatures and plants, very original. I did find the promiscuous sex and sex talk uncomfortable, but would skim the parts I didn't care for. I understand the abuse and violence is necessary to the story and character development, but the casual exchange of partners and instant attraction and gratification just made me flinch. Great job overall, thank you for your work.
I am really enjoying this story. But Hermione is really not coming off as all that bright, is she? She keeps making one stupid blunder after another-I mean, I know Slytherins are pretty slick (pun intended), but come on! I know she's got to have some wit stored up with all those booksmarts.
