Etoile 4/30/06 . chapter 1
Interesting...he doesn't sound very regretful of his decision and seems rather calm about the whole situation.
Cheval de la Nuit 9/13/03 . chapter 1
Wow!

not a comment usually give out by me, but I very impressed. So much so,that I cannot seem to find anything eloquent to say at the moment...it'll come

You colour a very vivid picture, it is unusual to imagine the perfect Inspector amidst hellfire and the foul water of the Seine, but you wove the elements together.

Tres bon!

The last three paragraphs...the repetition...it really helps to seal the poem. They undulate, almost like the wretchhed river, or the flames of Hell...

i'm jumping on the "anti-Hell" bandwagon.

Javert doesn't belong in Hell. he's as much a victim of the system as the others, yet more honorable than anyone else in the story short of bishop Bienvenu. he's brave, selfless, and dedicated to his work.

the *readers* of Les Miserables know that Valjean is not a bad guy at heart, but how would *Javert* know that? the police dossier on Valjean is mighty long and unappetizing: poaching, breaking and entering, multiple escapes from the galleys, resisting re-capture, robbery of a bishop, then highway robbery of a LITTLE BOY, an obscene amount of fraud (M.-sur-M.), resisting arrest again, breaking out again, and kidnapping of a small child. yes, he was Cosette's legal guardian accoding to Fantine's last will and testament - but Thenadier never mentioned that note to Javert! and to top it all off, sedition and conspiracy against the State, which is by itself a capital offense.

it was not up to Javert to decide whether Valjean deserves to go to prison again: that's what the judge and jury are for. a cop can't decide whom to arrest or not to arrest, not back then, and certainly not now. if there's a warrant out - go get him, regardless of your personal opinion. and Valjean was considered one of the most dangerous and wanted men in France.

so i don't think Javert belongs in Hell. he deserves a freaking medal.

Pretty good! Different from most Javert poems.
Scuba Steve 5/17/01 . chapter 1
There is one critical flaw in this poem, Javert would not be cast into Hell. True, he is a Catholic, and suicide is a damnable sin according to the Catholic religion, but to think that he would be sent to Hell is to miss the entire point of Les Mis. Valjean was evil when he left Toulon, Bienvenu showed him the light. The underlying theme of the novel is that it does not matter what is said about you, or what you have done wrong. All that matters is for one to try to be a good man, and always do what he thinks is right. Javert believes strongly that he is doing God's work by hunting down criminals, though his motives may be tainted due to his childhood. However, Javert is doing right by keeping the streets safe, though he is wrong about Valjean. Ironically, it is Valjean who leads him to the light. Upon seeing this light, Javert's mortal self cannot accept it. This is why he kills himself, but there is great significance in the way he dies. Water. Look at the novel again, water is used throughout. It cleanses, like a baptism. As he dies, Javert is cleansed. He rises to Heaven.

Very well written. This was characterization and poetry at their best! :) Great job!
Rogue Knight1 4/19/01 . chapter 1
I think you might have missed the point of Javert's suicide. He ended his life because he realized his persecution of Valjean had been a great injustice. Knowing that he had hounded an innocent man, he seeks to redeem himself by dying. Here, it seems that he hates Valjean, and that he suicided to escape from him.
