Muzzlehatch 2009-06-17 . chapter 14Well, that was a gripping story. I'm not sure about people spitting upon returning vets however. Some have said that it's an urban legend. There is no proof that anyone was ever abused in that way. I was going to college in San Francisco back in the late 60's and one of the ROTC instructors, a sergeant, lived nearby in the Haight-Ashbury section of town, and he was sometimes the target of insults from the hippies, but nobody ever dared to spit on him... |
Muzzlehatch 2009-06-14 . chapter 8Wow, Ron's doing a Lt. Calley on those people. Not good. Guess there's more to being a soldier than what a week's training can instill. Chem-Halo's DA pic of Kim in the cage is what drew me to your story. |
Muzzlehatch 2009-06-14 . chapter 6Great description of the helicopter crash. One of my high school classmates was a chopper pilot in Nam. Got shot down twice and survived. The US military lost a third of its helicopters every year in that war. |
 Muzzlehatch 2009-06-14 . chapter 2Now you're cookin' with gas! |
Drag0nf1y 2008-03-06 . chapter 14Wow... I mean just wow. That was a really deep story. I'm actually crying, something that only movies managed to do. You have talent, serious talent. I await your future stories. |

CajunBear73 2006-03-19 . chapter 14Good work Ez. You put together a very good story of personal conflict, descent to & retrieval from madness (for some), and the depths & heights that someone will go to for a loved one. All of this & more with the Tet Offensive going on at the time.
I saw some movie portrayals of some of the combat action, and figured you had other more personal sources for others, but you displayed the contradictions, absurdity, insanity & madness of fighting in this war through & around Ron and his squad members fairly well.
I myself never had to get involved in this war, but I wondered what would have happened to me if I had to serve there. There were some family members & friends who did go to Vietnam, and they came out alright, but you did detect a dark side in them that, if you knew them prior to Vietnam, you didn't notice until they came back.
My 18th birthday was in the month before Saigon fell in 1975 and registering for the draft in the US ended a couple of days after my birthday. In later years I found myself drawn to what happened to our country & military because of that war and read up on the war and questioned people who had been there as well. It was a very chaotic period socially, politically and militarily then and we are just now understanding all that took place then.
I was pleasantly surprised to see some of what I had learned about this war in this story from someone who was born several years after it ended; you did your homework very well sir. As for the ground combat you portrayed, I commend you for what you put on display here. One of the things I learned about personal combat from this war and from my time in an Infantry company later, you fight for yourself, your friends and 'family', especially, to come back in one piece. Our military since Vietnam has seen fit to make this philosophy a part of combat tactics at all levels: you take care of you people first while performing the mission.
Thank you for your tribute to those who served in that war; those who didn't come back, and those who did. If you plan to continue this storyline, I will await it's publication here. |
CajunBear73 2006-03-12 . chapter 7As with the PBR's... Also see a bit of "We were soldiers" as well. Good melding of stories in this one. |
CajunBear73 2006-03-12 . chapter 5Pretty descriptive about some of the horrors of this war, but nonetheless, some of this did happen there. I'm going out on a limb here, but I suspect you are drawing from "Apocalypse Now" for some of this story. Air Cav & "Flight of the Valkaries"?
Onward. |
spectre666 2005-11-12 . chapter 14All right, where to start.1: It is not "Di Nang" it is "Da Nang."
2. If you are going to write a war story, for God's sake study the military. Your military justice and awards are totally unbelievable. A sergeant does not have the authority to demote anyone. A corporal cannot award medals (Retired Corporal? I assume medically.)
3. You've taken your history from movies and revisionist teachers. In 1969, while not popular, the war still had the support of the majority of Americans.
4. Your repeated statements of a war the soldiers did not support and did not understand. Totally wrong. Just a hint of the hidden history of the conflict. Look up S.E.A.T.O., it may give you a glimmering of why we were there and why our word as a nation was no longer trusted after 1973.
5. The atrocities. I have to assume you are a follower of the John Kerry line of accusation. "I was told...Another unit... I heard." As in every war, atrocities were committed, but probbaly fewer than any other war. They were just better reported by a press with its' own agenda.
In closing, please, please, study the history of a period before you write. I thought the idea for the story had real potential, but you destroyed it in detail. |
surforst 2005-11-12 . chapter 14"Global Justice agents dicked around with loading Drakken and Shego into a police van" Somehow I figured it would be something like that. Good old GL.
Anyway a fitting end to a good story. Makes you question who this will affect them in other areas. Will Ron and Kim be willing to kill now when on mission. Will they even go on missions. All up in the air since I doubt your going to write a sequel. Anyway this was a good story and in the end thats all that matters. |
surforst 2005-11-05 . chapter 13Hm...Josh got it in the end. O well not like anyone really care.
Just one thing to note. What were the global justice agents doing while crazy boy waves his gun around. Then again this is global justice we are talking about. They were probably waiting for Kim to handle it like she always does.
Anyway I see your coming to an end unless the NVA come throught that portal seeking revenge. Hey its possible. |
