Teh.Juxtaposer 2009-08-11 . chapter 71God... This was so beautiful... Definitely one of my favorite Marauders stories to date.
Thank you so much... I never really got how the Marauders were not able to see through Peter, but your fic helped... I really loved the part about Sev and James... and the best part is that all of this could be cannon and works in accordance to the story put forth by Mrs. Rowling.
Thank you :D
Short Sequel? |
Shadow Lighthawk 2009-06-05 . chapter 70This story was much harder to read than it should have been. A lot of that, I think had to do with the knowledge that was always in the back of my mind. I couldn't manage to forget, even in the happiest moments, that James and Lily would die, that Harry would go on to a childhood of torture, that the Marauders - that wonderful, tight-knit bunch - would end in betrayal and anguish. The sense of doom, at times, was overwhelming. Every time Remus said something about the pack always being there I flinched.
I did enjoy getting the backstory. Meeting the young Marauders, seeing into who they were way back when instead of seeing them in flashbacks - I found that interesting, and the look into Remus' head at the start of Harry's third year was fascinating. And I loved meeting Aaron and Viviane in three dimensions instead of two, though that made it even harder to lose them.
For all that I liked meeting them and all, though, I had a terribly difficult time connecting with the characters the way I did in Unlocking Harry Potter and the sequels. It might be that 'sense of doom' thing again, or maybe it's just that I have more interest in Harry and his life. Maybe it's that I care more about Remus and Sirius and Co in the context of how they relate to Harry. I'm not sure what that says about me as a person. What I *do* know is that whatever it was that kept me from fully connecting with these characters made Release the Wolves very difficult for me to read.
There are some things missing, too, I think. Things that were only touched on or not even mentioned in the story that I wanted to see more of. You certainly hit all the high notes (the Shrieking Shack Incident was amazingly well done, for instance), and we got a great view of life with the elder Potters, but there seemed to be things that got glossed over. I imagine that a lot of the 'missing' pieces were cut out because the story was already so damned long.
I don't know whether it will please you to know or not, but I still hate Pettigrew. In my own way, I am nearly as unforgiving as Moony, and Pettigrew's whiny little excuses make me sick. His only redeeming momnet is when he offs himself in Finding the Key.
In the end, I read this story mostly out of curiosity mixed with a desire to know more about the pack's past. The actual reading of it was quite a challenge, and I found myself disappointed that the characters weren't more different from their eventual incarnations in the trilogy. This is also going to alter the way I read the trilogy, which will be interesting. I don't know yet whether it will be good interesting or bad interesting, but I do know that there will be added layers the next time I reread Unlocking Harry Potter. And really, I kind of like that idea. ^_^ |
heiressofanor 2009-03-23 . chapter 71Great story! I really enjoyed reading it! :) Are you planning on doing a sequel? |
Hahukum Konn 2009-02-17 . chapter 71I just finished the PDF versions of these and came here to review. I really liked this version of the MWPP AU you have (though HBP and DH canon make it a little trickier to keep everything straight).
I also liked how seamlessly you moved from one point of view to another, and how well you matched the fic up to extant canon without obviously recycling material from the books. :) |
Anon. 2008-12-23 . chapter 50 I really just want to say that you're a wonderful writer, and I've been enthralled in your stories for the past few days. I read this story last because I read Unlocking Harry first, so I new what would happen. Reading about Remus and Severus has torn me up. Not seconds ago, my eyes were welling up with tears for what has yet to come.
I'm usually a very picky reader when it comes to fanfiction. You're writing is almost entirely without flaws, and your characters are perfect. I find myself wanting more and more. I almost cannot stand what you do to the characters, yet I continue reading wanting to know what they'll do next.
There is not much else I can say except you have my admiration for a beautiful tale. |
Haruka-Hime 2008-07-03 . chapter 71This story is so good. I love it. It fills in the blanks of the Marauder Years in a way not anticipated. P.S. The code list is cute. |
