I think Robin's a historian the way Nami is a cartographer. This is what they do to fulfill their dreams, so it's a very important part of who they are- it's just not their official job with respect to the crew.

Technically, she is an anthropoligist, I believe. They study old civilizations; archeologists study the natural world, I think. Historians are more recent anthropoligists.
