A ruby is red, Van's hair is black. If you were going to use a ruby to describe one of Van's physical characteristics then you should of said it about his eyes. Of course then it would have to be a dark ruby. And also Van is not Hitomi's first love HE is her TRUE LOVE. Amono is her FIRST love she even says it in the begining of the first episode!

I bet Van feels the same way.
