It's short, strange, a little silly, and nice.
I don't think it could've been a main cast member: the girl's a student. That'd leave Rei and Asuka. It can't be Asuka, seeing as she spends lots of time with him, and she doesn't really need to get high on the few times she sents his smell, sees his body, and she'd know better than just whispers about him going berserk. Also, Asuka's anything BUT humble, and the girl seemed to love that about him, without feeling guilty because she was the complete opposite.
It can't be Rei, you said it yourself. Again, she sees him way more than 5 times a day. Sure, not as many as Asuka, but plenty. And she gets his scent. And his smile. Etc.
The only existing character that could possibly fit this role would be Hikari, but her character would have to be bent a bit.
Meh, just wanted to point that out. I like your writing, btw.

Some of this story's value lies on the openness for reader to guess who the admirer should be, so I choose NOT to guess.

whoever she is she is probably an adult, not another teen. there was some emphasis on him being a man earlier in the story, and the school bells meaning nothing to her also point in that direction. i also got the impression of someone who is on the peripherals of his life, so probably an auxiliary character.

Great story though. Very nice characterization I was a little confused about exactly what she was doing up there by the fence. I wasn't sure if she was having some alone time or some... alone time. if you catch my drift. As for who the messed up girl is, I'd like to think a troubled Section-2 agent, just because it's probably the most unlikely choice.

I know it's not meant to be comedy but her obsession is amusing. How poetic her inner monologue is and then her conversational skills turn into utter molasses. Classic teenage hormone syndrome right there!

It was creepy in the sweet, teenage love sort of way (particularly since I can imagine myself having similar thoughts in similar moments). It kind of makes you feel sad that Shinji never had someone like that in the series. Even if she was completely submissive to him, her total belief in him could have been a comfort for the later parts of the series if she'd actually ever befriended him.

You could definitely continue this into a random class member-Shinji romance if you wanted. But it's a cute little piece on its own. I'm glad I read this after the last Witness chapter. It cheered me up in an odd way.

There is something you missed in the Author's Notes, though.

It can't be anyone who works at NERV, or at least any of the bridge crew. Remember the battle against the Fourth Angel? The one where Shinji went foaming-at-the-mouth berserk? Yes, that one. They all know about that, and they all know perfectly well what Shinji is capable of. Section 2 may not have first-hand knowledge, but one of their agents assigned to watch him wouldn't sneak around like this, I think. If it's her job to watch him, she'd just do it.

It is, as others have noted, simultaneously creepy and sweet to imagine that the viewpoint character is, for instance, Ritsuko or Misato or Maya. But they know something about Shinji that the viewpoint character doesn't: that "berserker" is actually a pretty apt description of him. "Werewolf" also works, if you want to be poetic.

Yet it can't be one of his classmates, either, not if the class bells mean nothing to her, not if she has to tell herself over and over that his age means nothing. Also, her inner monologue seems more like that of a very cynical adult woman than a giddy giggling teenage girl.

So I can't decide who this is likely to be. It's someone he knows, someone he's spoken with before, someone who isn't supposed to be there watching him, someone who's heard rumors about his werewolf side but doesn't believe them and has no firsthand knowledge, and it's not a girl his own age.

It's a puzzlement.

I think the amount of detail you put into her mental image of Ikari is perfect. It's lavish praise that ignores all possibility of imperfection so that nothing but the ideal remains. She's nuts, so she should be more than a little over-the-top. Good work.

That was good. Major introspection and you leave us to wonder just who is was having her daydreams about him. Though some clues point to a person who goes to school, I would have to imagine that it's not Asuka or Rei, Hikari maybe or possibly Mana. In the off chance it's an ACC, still good.

that is a powerful, overwhelming chapter. Her obsession borders on the insane, to put shinji up on a pedestal lke that. on the other hand, if she could talk to him and become a bit closer, i am sure shinji would feel much better about himself.
as for who she is, it can't be anyone from Nerv at all. it probably has to be a classmate, or at least a schoolmate of realativly the same age.
