| Princess-Lalaith 2008-05-28 ch 9, | abuseDeffinitely an awesome fic. Very few people I've found who do justice to Edmund, he's such a complex character, which is why I like him so much. I also like Susan a lot, it's so sad that Lewis left her as he did, but that's why the one Narnian fic I've finished thus far is about her, I wanted to give her a fair ending. But going back to your fic, I think it was wonderful. I think that the conversation he had with Aslan in the dream was good, and the moment he realized what he was missing to be over the past, it was just great. Deffinitely a very good story, and very fitting after what you did with "Kings in Exile". I liked both fics a lot. Congratulations on your work. |
| Forest Ink 2008-02-21 ch 9, | abuseI've read this- along with Kings in Exile- more times than I can count, and as much as I enjoy your other stories as well, it was this series (back when it was still being written) that brought me to your page and keeps me coming back. Your writing is amazing and I hope you never lose interest in it, because that just means that many more hours of enjoyment for me and the rest of your readers :)I love your ability to write in poignant ways while retaining such simplicity. I still hope for the following two sequels to come out... I used to read your little blurb about them in your profile every so often to reassure myself that it was still in the back of your mind and that it would come out soon. Since you inevitably decided to take it out a while ago, I grew kind of sad... I hope those ideas are still floating around somewhere waiting to be commited to paper. I'll be waiting for the day! |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 9, | abuseFrancie, you are remarkable. This is one of the best stories I’ve ever read, hands down. It’s wonderful. Every detail, every characterization is spectacular. The dialog you create for each character is simply perfect, it matches them and their personality exactly right. I feel as if they’re each really saying it. Left to some other author, this story may have suffered overkill, but your amazing writing takes care of everything. It’s totally cheese-less. You carved out a beautiful, meaningful story from a few scant lines in the last book. Edmund is ridiculously well presented. This is so my favorite Edmund story of like, ever. Did I say how much I love the way you handled Susan? I’ve always been pretty much of an optimist when it comes to her. Some fans like to think she just faded out of the series, citing Peter’s “no longer a friend of Narnia,” but I’ve always taken the “always a queen of Narnia” aspect to heart. I forgot to mention last review that I loved Aslan’s sad eyes and message to Peter that only Susan can save herself. Like so many of your stories, The Way to Narnia is so well written and clever that it’s effectively become canon for me, indistinguishable from something that C.S. Lewis might have penned. Whenever I read TLB, I’m always surprised not to see mention of Peter and Edmund at the rugby game or the conversations on train platforms. This is truly a masterpiece of Narnian fiction, for which I commend and thank you for an exceptional read. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 8, | abuseThis chapter made me really happy. Not happy the way cute snippets of writing or couples getting together make me happy, but wider happiness. Sunnier. I don't know exactly why. I think it was the description of what Peter, Edmund, and Lucy could do with their lives, how they could get a place on the beach and just live. A happy ending in England, as close to Golden Age happiness as they can get. And I loved the paragraphs where Edmund forgave himself. Those were really well done. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 7, | abuseThis was another great chapter. However, only one line stands out to me this time: "This is the sleep of those with a restful conscience," was such an incredible interpretation of Edmund's feelings. Seriously, I think it might be the best dramatic line ever written for Edmund. And of course, the dialog written for Aslan is amazing too. I (and a lot of other writers) always struggle with his character, but yours was flawless. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 6, | abuseSigh. This chapter was great too! I can never get enough of your colorful writing, Francie. Literally. The second I read "it was not the warm brightness of a golden crown or the cheerful transparent green of beech leaves" I knew this chapter would be one of my favorites. And wasn't disappointed. This was great because of the conflict with Peter and Edmund against the temptation of the rings. I remember the line in TLB, how Peter would "come like a shot if he's allowed" and can't help but feel bad for him. After all, as High King he has the most right to Narnia that any of the others. And Peter giving in to temptation, with Edmund there as the voice of wisdom to stop him - you handled it marvelously. I love Edmund's character! You do so much justice. . . no pun intended. But seriously, I loved everything in this chapter. "He would not admit out loud or even in the upper part of his consciousness that it was also like Deathwater because part of him wanted the rings for his own." -Wow. Just wow. That is one hell of a line, and it totally hits the mark. And later, when Peter is apologizing, he thinks, "Oh, shut up. Shut up! You don’t know anything about it." and my heart just went out to him, because of course we all know how Ed feels. He had it much worse, because he DID touch the rings, he did eat the Turkish Delight, and he did betray them all. This was the best chapter. Ever. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 5, | abuseThis chapter was excellent. The part about Peter and how he could spot a suitor of Susan's a mile away, but be totally unaware of his own adorers was hilarious. And there's so much detail! The blip in the train's momentum, the neighborhood untouched by bombs. . . And Edmund's struggle with the crime he committed so long ago. Have I mentioned how much I love that you don't angst over Edmund's extreme sobbing, suicidal guilt about his betrayal for the whole story? It's more real than that. And this whole chapter was so awesome that I can't help pointing out my favorite bits. "Edmund always sought to banish his old resentment of Peter, but it was sometimes a slow process, an erosion of old habits just as the waves ground down the peninsula of Cair Paravel. It was certainly taking Edmund two lifetimes." -That's a great description about how Ed feels regarding Peter and his own jealousy (that he knows he ought not to have). "Why can't anything work properly? It's a simple matter, really. One only has to organize the trains and be aware of the schedules. If I were in charge I could do it handily and make sure we all had a decent way of getting around." -I loved this line because it's so very Edmund. I can practically see it in print before my eyes. "You sleep, but you sleep prepared. Even in dreams you ready yourself." -This is only one of the lines that I especially love about your writing. It's so very Narnia; so noble, and so Peter-and-Edmund. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 4, | abuseI just loved the description of Susan the night-owl soothing Edmund to sleep at three AM. And Edmund is so developed. He knows his role in others' lives, but he resents it. And he resents being resentful about it. Does that make sense? All I know is this chapter totally rocked. Much kudos. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 3, | abuseI assure you, friend, the rugby talk was in no way boring or confusing. Some authors falter a little when they write similar scenes, but you? Not at all. I liked this chapter quite a bit. It made me laugh, especially Edmund's line: "Can't he wear clothes like normal people?" Peter was marvelously done also. How popular he is, and how protective he acts when Edmund hurts his knee - to the point of overcompensating - was fabulous. Your writing is just wonderful. Little phrases, the ones that add color and depth - like "quick to play his trump card" and "smiled with half his mouth" - those bits make smile. I think my favorite part was when Peter and Edmund talk a little about morality. Peter is so morally grounded: there's right, there's wrong, and nothing else. But Edmund knows better and can see deeper than his brother, and he knows that sometimes, there are things that aren't quite either. |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 2, | abuseFantastic chapter. I like the way Edmund explains why he didn't go off to battle much, because Peter was so overprotective. And I've always loved your little character traits for Ed; waking up at three AM, or that high color in his cheeks when he's particularly angry. I especially liked the bit about him feeling a little annoyed with Lucy, and how she's always so good. It was all very well done, but that's no surprise. "It didn't matter that he was right; Caspian never fought with Lucy. He only said 'I know exactly what you mean,' when Lucy said something." -I loved the reference to the Dawn Treader. =] |
| Love and Rock Music 2008-01-13 ch 1, | abuseI've been perfectly awful to never review this story, because it's probably my favorite Edmund fic ever, and I featured it over at my website as the very first Story of the Month. So it really is about time that I gave you the recognition this story totally deserves. Right from the first line this story draws me in. I don't know what it is about your writing, Francie, but your words always seem exactly right. "Thank goodness Edmund’s cool head prevailed." -The story starts right off with Edmund's thoughts and personality fused into the plot, and I love it. Ed's my favorite character and you do him perfect justice. Everything is laced with Edmund's opinions, but you don't overdo it. Ever. I love that about your writing! So many authors forget that Edmund has grown up and matured, and the keep consistent with that awful bratty kid he is in the first book. This chapter was really great; Peter, Lucy, Jill, Eustace, Polly and the Professor are all very well done. "Edmund felt that old pang. Everyone wanted to trust in Peter." -I loved this line. |
| Lady Eivel 2006-08-23 ch 9, | abuseGood. Just one thing- I thought Edmund's crown was silver? Apart from that, it was a pretty good fic. |
| elecktrum 2006-07-08 ch 8, | abuse“This is where we were when Caspian winded his horn.” Now that is just beautiful. Bravo Zulu. |
