abuseA simply beautiful story.

Your indepth and poignant understanding of the characters is wonderfully refreshing.

Definetly one of few plausible Rurouni Kenshin fanfictions.

I agree with your opinion on Seisouhen. I personally found the OVA's storyline very depressing in regards to the manga. When I first watched it, I originally thought it was Watsuki's work and was really disheartened and even found it hard to watch the anime without bursting into tears! Hehe, later I went into denile. If denile was a river in Egypt, then I would have been going up it without a paddle. Yeah...that bad.

I mean the way Kaoru was portrayed as a quiet, almost broken woman really made my heart ache aswell as thenoticable lack of cheerfulness and Kenshin's rudimentary remarks also fueled my determination.Later I found out that it was not thought of as canon, and was able to breathe easier.

I guess every Rurouni Kenshin fan has their own utopian ending inside their heads. Personally I found your characterization much more convincing than Seisouhen's.

Thank you for sharing this!

abuseI rushed through the first five chapters, couldn't stop reading and now my eyes are acing and swirling like the rurouni's *g*

Ah, it's so beautifully written, with so much insight in the characters, kenshin and kaoru... you describe them very well, their feelings, fears and how they misunderstand each other... shortly said, your personal writing-style is very good.

And you develope also a storyline in little steps, that hold me captive: what matters has katsura to discuss with kenshin? How is the connection between Ryou and Saito? What is his background during the Bakumatsu?

I haven't read a FF in such quality (both charakter knowledge and story developement) for a long time. Can't wait to read the next chapters!

abuseSkimmed through the other reviews for good measure, and my first opinion holds. Ayumi is just too perfect. No one goes through horrible tragedies and remains like she has. Look at Tomoe.

Also: I might not have caught her age. But if she's so gorgeous and perfect, why isn't she married? At that point in time, regardless of past engagements :P, marriage was mostly a business deal, not really related to love. In our time, I can picture her waiting for love, but not there.

Oh... She would be so much more likeable to me if she had become a priestess. Like that nun who loved Sesshoumaru in Inuyasha.. XD Go on, laugh. I had an Inuyasha phase. *flinch*

Again: there were parts I had to skip because I was just so sick of it being in Ayami's point of view. I mean, I was reading a Rurouni Kenshin fic. Give it from any non-OC's view and I can suck it up. :l Point being, I totally may have missed some of her background.

abuseFirst off, I'd like to say that I very much enjoyed this story. It's a bit rare to find stories with scenes that really impact the reader emotionally. (For instance, the scene when Kaoru sees Kenshin with Ayumi!)

However. I found Ayumi to be a horrible Mary Sue, IMHO. The perfectly beautiful, perfectly nice, and on top of that, having survived a horrible tragedy. Tsk, tsk. And having Sano basically fall for her? Along with her.. albeit vague relationship with Kenshin?

I very much enjoyed reading the story from Kenshin and Kaoru's perspective, but too much of it was given to Ayumi near the end of the fanfic. I had no desire to read those parts, at all. I would seriously consider revising... because honestly, it's a great story. She needs... I don't know, a huge personality flaw? Or something else to her looks besides gorgeous? Both? Or maybe it would be better if she hadn't survived something horrible.

Now, some people might totally disagree with me. And it's your story, I just felt like giving my opinion, only because I enjoyed the story so much. I think it could gain a lot more reviews if you downplayed Ayumi's role, and changed one of the Categories to "Romance". (Haha.)

On a lesser note, I also found Ryou's transformation sort of unbelieveable. That's not something to change per se, but maybe something to consider? The best villains have the ability to inspire pity. He essentially went from being perfect to absolutely awful. Instead of having the huge personality turn, maybe... his downfall could have been misplaced compassion. Or an off-standish, Aoshi-like coldness, duty before everything (Kaoru being for children and cooking, as you said) and very sexist. But eh, I don't know. And if not, then I would put more clues into the beginning that he wasn't so perfect. At least more than the fact that he wants to kill Kenshin (and that Kenshin mistrusts him.)

That's about it. And yes, I know this is like five years later, after it was written. But it's never too late to edit something. Or to perfect it, you know? :P It might be fun. And since you're still around...!

Gah, I hope you're someone who likes constructive criticism. Oh well! Loved the story! Thank you for writing! I wish I could make myself finish something, gah!

abuseOh, man. I am so glad this story ended happily! I mean, since the first, like, three-quarters of it was "how many times can Kenshin screw up his and Kaoru's relationship?" >_< But the ending made me very happy. I want to see Sano and Ayumi happy together in a sequel of some sort. And Kaoru and Kenshin etting started on making babies. ^_^

abuseThis story... is five years old.

I know this very well.

I also know you wrote it in a time when you knew the anime and manga canon FAR before the atrocity of Seishouhen came out, and therefor your opinion to it may have sense changed- if you even care.

I know your comment was written five years ago, BUT I NEED TO RANT.

SEISHOUHEN IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM THE 'OFFICAL' ENDING! Watsuki has said so. It was simply made to wrap up the anime, and decided to HORRIBLY mess with it. It wasn't an 'insight' into Kenshin's character because it WASN'T Kenshin. The Kenshin of the manga and anime would NEVER leave his wife like that. And Kaoru also would have chased his butt wherever he went. It is not the character's, and is therefor in no way canon.

Watsuki has himself denied it as being the true ending- and the true ending goes so against this, and since Watsuki had that 'happily ever after' always in mind, and actually risked a BETTER story plot (Kaoru actually dying in the Jinchuu arc) for the SAKE of that happy ending, what reason has Seishouhen to go and destroy that?

NONE. It's NOT NOT NOT NOT a deeper insight into Kenshin- because he was NOT Kenshin. Kenshin is NOT that emo to have to forever leave his wife! **, all he did in Seishouhen was moan and complain about how horrible his life was and how he'd never be forgiven.

NOT CANON. AT ALL. NOT OFFICAL. AT ALL.

AT ALL.

Again, five years. I know.

But I'm obessed.

abuseWow, I can't believe I read this whole story on my iPod. LOL

Anyhow, after reading this, I have to say that this story is tyranny. Tyranny in the form of infuriatingly long thought sequences when Ayumi is on the verge of death. Tyranny in the form of about 12 0 "had"s being used in the entire story, tyranny in the form of a comedy that almost became a tragedy, tyranny in the sense that even after everything, Kenshin was still unable to just go in and kick Ryou's sorry ** in the same way that makes his character special in the anime.

Tyranny in the sense that Seisouhen was part of this, since Watsuki himself would never abuse his characters and turn them into emotional baggage like Seisouhen.

Gack, but I think Ayumi totally saved this story. Her character is brilliant, and she's definitely someone special. Her charming Aristocratic way of speaking kind of worn off towards the end, but her otherwise energetic and composed personality is magick.

abuseI enjoyed reading this immensely.
I read it in one sitting! I love how your characters are all very 3-dimensional, and not just Kenshin and Kaoru.
I love Megumi here, and it surprises me how I've come to like Ayumi, as well. =)

Thank you for writing and sharing this with your readers. =)
It was a great pleasure. =)

abuseIt's a sad and not Waffy ending but it is fine... and here is a recomendation.. thou shall read the ending of the manga because in the manga Kenshin realizes that he can move on from the burden of guilt and live his life. He ends up marrying Kaoru and having Kenji. Passes of the reversed blade sword to Yahiko, which Yahiko's son, Shinya, and Kenji fight over to obtain.

abuseI LOVE this story...wow, the emotions it made me feel were extrodinary. I could barely breathe at times I was so sad or angry. That takes quite a talent...although, if I had to give my oppinion on one thing that annoyed me a lot, it was that Ayumi seems like a better person than Kaoru in this story. Well, that's how it seems. I mean, she's so selfless and clear, and then Kaoru is a mess and..and...well, let's just say I sort of agree with Megumi. You're probably aware of this, but I find it disturbing that I like this other woman better than Kaoru is in the story. Kaoru needs to shapen up...I know she's such a strong, selfless person, except I don't see it much here yet. Maybe I'll see it in the future chapters, but it's annoyed me so much I had to mention it here. And I know for a fact that she IS beautiful, when she's dressed up in a kimono and stuff. I think she's prettier than Tomoe anyhow, but that's just my oppinion. I think it's the grief that made her beauty fade a bit..

Uh well anyway, don't take this for a flame, I'm just mentioning it. I'm sure I'll be satisfied by the end.
