Miriam1 2008-07-02 . chapter 1This fic was very dark. Vlad's cruelty had overtaken his obsessions.
The idea of Danny's foes beating up on Jack was frightening, and watching it helplessly would probably hurt Danny worse than any pain Vlad could physically inflict.
This exchange made me shiver:
Danny’s panic levels kicked up a notch and he said warningly, “Plasmius! Remember what I said to you the first time we met? It hasn’t changed. You say it, and I will to, and then there won’t be any secrets – or any hope of you getting with my mom… not that there really is any now, but that’s beside the point.”
Plasmius shook his head condescendingly. “Danny, Danny, Danny. Don’t you understand? I don’t care anymore! Your entire family has become a pain in my side, and I won’t stand for it. The fun Plasmius you once knew won’t come back until well after you no longer exist… Now, where were we?”
Oh crud, thought Danny. Plasmius doesn’t care anymore? That didn’t sound like him. Didn’t he obsess over his mother for 20 years? Didn’t he obsess over having Danny as a son for the past year? Was he really sick of it all? If he was… Danny and his father were in real danger.
Indeed, Danny and Jack were in real trouble.
The escape was very nicely done. And to think it started because Vlad wanted to choke Danny.
Using the Ghost Catcher was great. You made Danny remember what happened when Vlad's human half was separated from his ghost half, from TUE.
Vlad DOES have good in him. It's always been there. It is one of the reasons Vlad is such a delightfully complex character.
I appreciate how you characterized the separate halves. The ghost half remained Plasmius, and the human half remained Vlad.
I like the fact that Danny called Vlad "Uncle Vlad." It is probably the first time he would have done so without any recrimination or sarcasm, but with actual love.
This exchange warmed my heart:
“I… knew you were… good,” the boy whispered. “I knew you… cared…”
Vlad lifted Danny into his arms and brought him to a chair. He sat him down and kneeled before him. Tears were streaming uncontrollably down his face. “Daniel… I… I’m so sorry…”
“It’s ok… Uncle Vlad… you still have people… who… can love you…”
The boy closed his eyes, and added as an afterthought, “And… I still think… you… should get… a cat.” He laughed softly before falling unconscious.
Vlad embraced Danny, crying freely. Without his ghost side, all that hatred, obsession, contempt… none of it mattered anymore. He lifted the boy and brought him upstairs to a bed. He tended to the wound he’d made on Danny’s cheek and throat.
The end was beautiful.
Thank you for this wonderful one-shot.
Sincerely,

Writer's-BlockDP 2006-04-20 . chapter 1wow. I can't really describe this in any way other than that single word. actually, the word "incredible" comes to mind as well, along with "fantastic" and "super". Yeah, I think that pretty much sums it all up. |
