Hey, this is a really good fic! I'm not crying, but I can really feel Okita's pain and Yamazaki's helplessness. I especially like the ending, where Okita managed to put his mask back on just before he died. It's quite sad that he didn't quite believe in his friends enough to reveal the extent of his suffering to them, even in death.
Please write more fics! =]

Although this story was extremely sad, I think you are correct in believing we must be honest about how the man must have died. Because Souji is such a beloved character, it often becomes tempting to "sugar-coat" certain aspects of his life, this being one of them. This was an excellent fic; compliments to the chef.

Aw, that was so sad! It almost made me cry...
The saddest thing is that Okita Souji was a real person and this character was based off him. He died from tuberculosis in reality, when he was about 24 years old.

wow... I don't think there is anything more terrifying than suffocation. I have asthma too, horribly, i don't know the details of TB, but I don't think there is any worse kind of death than what he must have gone through. Aw, dammit now you've got me crying too.

yup, this made me cry. I think this is the most powerful line: "...like he should have."
souji dying 'improperly'...That thought stopped me in my tracks. I just skimmed your profile, and I think it's interesting about your big sister: I'm a big sister myself, and I have a history of being cruel to my crybaby younger siblings...sometimes, I think being too emotional can be a weakness.
But that's not the case with this story. The strength of this story is that it is intensely emotional. my heart absolutely aches for Susumu, who had to be there to watch Souji suffer. There's nothing worse than that, except maybe what Souji himself had to go through, being so afraid and in pain. Usually I hate stories about Souji's death, but this was either an exceptionally good story or just an exceptionally painful one... hard to tell for sure when you're as sad as I am at the moment.
anyway, good job, and go get yourself a 'cheer up' cup of tea!
