It's extremely unlikely that someone Sara's age would have tumors this advanced unless she has a family history of very aggressive breast cancer. Additionally, even why they think they can just remove the tumor (a lumpectomy) the patient is asked to sign a consent form for a mastectomy if certain conditions apply to avoid this situation. (We've done this more times that I care to count in my family.) Self-exams save lives so if you find a suspicious lump don't hesitate to get it checked out. However, if you are under 40 its very, very unlikely to be cancerous or advanced if it is cancerous. |
