This was really good, creepy and leaving you guessing. I think it works all the better because it isn't spelled out exactly what is going on, e.g. wWas Dean a serial killer and this is what the shifter emulated, or is it that Dean is now the shifter and has been for longer or all those past deaths could be linked to jobs, etc.
I particularly liked how Sam remembers: "He told Sam once: it's what you believe that's important. If you don't believe you are what you say you are, then no one else will".
And also I liked: "His eyebrows waggle at him, but his eyes catch the light, and Sam can't tell what the twinkle in them means."

wow, this was scary. its like the suspenseful part of a horror movie and i kept waiting for dean to go apeshit and attack sam. so is that really dean who is now a killer or the shapeshifter who has been posing as dean ever since sam left for college?

I've been wading through every single SPN fanfic, looking for good ones... Nearly an hour with only barely decent ones, but your single one-shot made it all worth it. I absolutely love the subtle, vague hints at the truth. I love how Sam realizes it, but doesn't at the same time; how he ignores the signs. I definitely love how the new Dean acts like the old one, assimilating to fit into his new role.

I'm not completely sure I understood it correctly, but I'm thinking that in those few days that Dean disappears, the shifter, well, I don't know, kills Dean maybe, and then when "Dean" comes back, it's actually the shifter. :D Am I on the right track?
