Good writing; atmosphere was not overdone or underdone - in fact it totally matches the onscreen Ueda Jiro and Yamada Naoko. I was also wondering how he kept getting into her apartment so easily - obviously he's paid her overdue rent more than once and I think your theory is pretty accurate - the landlady giving him a spare key.
