I've read all the books and I don't exactly feel that this ending is right. Their love for each other was so strong. And well this ending sort of makes it sound like a "middle school fling" kinda of ending...you catch my drift?

i thought it was great... it's been a while since i actually read the books but i thought it sounded right. It keeps the same feel as the other ending-well almost.

I'd definitely go with the 'curl up in a corner and cry' option. It's been a while since I read these books and recently became interested in them again because I saw there was a movie being made. But I remember how I cried at the end of book 3 because of the bittersweet ending. You've made it even more bitter than sweet. I don't resent you, that's your choice as a writer, but it's just so sad... I for one love happy endings, although I like them more when they're not too sappy. If I resent someone, it would be Pullman, for giving such a despairing fate to these two beautiful, warm and noble characters. Oh well. I'm old enough to know life isn't often made of happily ever afters. I understand why Will acted the way he did in your fic, by the way, but I can't help wishing he didn't denied himself the small comfort of the yearly park-bench-meeting. Nicely written, albeit short.

Will was certainly being brave in your version...but I don't think Lyra could ever be angry at him like that. And you could have let Will tell Lyra what he was really thinking. She'd understand.
