Amira Tair 2008-10-26 . chapter 43
I finally could finish reading the story and once more I have to tell you that it's amazing. Your best story so far, in my opinion, although I may be biased because it's the story that made me discover and fall in love with your Narniad and with Peter (the same as TAS made me fall in love with Edmund).

I loved this story because it reminded me a lot of medieval tales of knights - I don't know why but it has always make me think of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, although I haven't read if for years-. Peter is like most of these knight errants, maybe too perfect and innocent, but yet you manage to depict a believable character with a fully fleshed out personality (which is being expanded in later tales), not just a stereotype. The other characters that appear (both original and canon) are all unique and different from each other. I liked especially Rhye (she is absolutely wonderful) and Philip. How you managed to expand - almost create - a character from the little material you had from the film and make him what he is is astonishing. His relationship, which evolves a lot, is deep and strong, and it was kind of refreshing to see them arguing or disagreeing, it made it even more realistic.

Another outstanding aspect is how you interweave elements from all the Chronicles, like the tree or Father Time with new and original imagery - absolutely stunning and sometimes horrible like the Slinn or Lasa- and even mythological creatures (the Seelie and Unseelie) like Lewis himself did. It reveals how much you work on this and gives the impression of someone who really enjoys writing - and when this can be noticed, reading becomes more enjoyable, at least for me.

I also appreciate that your stories, unlike many others, have a defined structure, they are round, and if they are left open or closed is because you chose to, not because you didn't know how to finish it. Here you draw a complete circle finishing exactly how you started, but leaviong the door open with those dark hints pointing directly at 'Thole'.

I wanted to finish my review (I can't make it short, even if i try!) with the meeting between Peter and Edmund, it was so so touching, heartbreaking, a beautiful climax for a beautiful story, which moved me a lot. There are no words to express it. Beautiful.

Ah ha! I knew those lyrics looked familiar. The lyrics you used in the Princess of War Drobe song are very similar to the lyrics of an old (very old) English (maybe) song that has been adapted by Loreena McKennitt fairly recently. Her lyrics run:

A farmer there lived in the north country
a hey ho bonny o
And he had daughters one, two, three
The swans swim so bonny o
These daughters they walked by the river's brim
a hey ho bonny o
The eldest pushed the youngest in
The swans swim so bonny o

Oh sister, oh sister, pray lend me your hand
with a hey ho a bonny o
And I will give you house and land
the swans swim so bonny o
I'll give you neither hand nor glove
with a hey ho a bonny o
Unless you give me your own true love
the swans swim so bonny o

They're not exactly the same, but they are fairly similar.

I finally got around to reading this after having it bookmarked for so long. I absolutely enjoyed this story very much and it was a lot better than my expectations. The way you had written everything completely drew me into the story. A fantastic work!

Hi! I read this and "they also serve" again, and I was intregued by that line about the Calormen embessador being scandalized at the unformality of the ball (chapter 43, I just can't review the same chapter twice), and I wondered: could we maybe get a view of narnia and it's monarchs from Calormen eyes? This ball would be nice, since it sounds so lovely, with the dacing centaurs and the naiads but of course anything you'll choose will be amazing. Just leaving you a plot bunny, if you find yourself bored one day...

Great fic! I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can tell you put a lot of work into planning and structuring it. I started reading it in the afternoon and couldn't (figuratively) put it down!

ok i actually read your story a while ago and i just wanted to let you know those slinn things scare the snap out of me! i swear! and what's worse is for some some reason i picture them as over stuffed weiner dogs- the whole fox face idea but in the shape of a weiner dog and poodle like hair around the middle...and for some reason they still freak me out. hahaha yeah oh and i love that Peter's not allowed near puddles haha i laughed for days over that one :)
anyways, on a saner note, i really love your story. all of them in fact. they have become canon for me, simply an extension of the books. i think they are wonderful. thank you for your time :D Jane

My first thoughts on this story were something akin to "I can't believe this is 43 Chapters!" (Or, 41 and a Prologue and Epilogue, if you prefer.)
Somehow, during reading, an 'only' snuck it's way into my sentiments!!
This was absoultely amazing, and I can't wait to read more of your works!!
(If you havn't already guessed, I'm slowly but surely working my way through your Narniad- and it's FANTASTIC.)

These last few days have been too busy to read this as it should be read, but I'm enjoying it thoroughly nevertheless. :-)

So now is when the quest really starts. I am amazed at the originality of the plot and how it is intertwined with The Magician's Nephew, it is so realistic one could imagine this actually happening to them. I've enjoyed the study of characters in these chapters, and how the curse on Edmund is affecting him and everyone. What shines here is Peter's selfless love for his brother to the extent not only of going to the West but also of renouncing to Aslan's company so that he can help Edmund; his faith and trust in Aslan is so deep, no wonder Aslan feels so proud of him.

I couldn't help smiling while reading the previous chapter and remembering the forge of the knife in the Blue River Smithy. The picture is also really beautiful and it goes very well with it.

And finally, this last chapter was really impressive. Peter's quest really deserved such a majestic farewell. The goodbye between siblings - especially the brothers- was sweet and sad, lightened with bits of humour - 'Plan a navy'. But what I liked more was your description, it was so vivid I have a very clear image in my head of the moment. Once more, Peter shines with his unconditional love for Narnia, wonderfully expressed in his bow to his subjects, and the last sentence leaves an echo as powerful as the deafening roar of the lion. It is the best sentence of the chapter. Ah, congratulations for the wonderful idea of including a hymn from the song of creation.

Thank you for this beautiful, beautiful story. *Off to continue reading*
Amira Tair 2008-08-06 . chapter 2
Now that 'Black Dwarfs, Blue River' is over, I took it as an excuse - as if I needed any!- to reread again what I consider the best Narnia fanfiction I have read. I really love it, and when I read it for the first time, the only thing I could think was 'How beautiful!', I was rendered speechless, and that's very difficult for me, as you may have already realised ;-)

So I'm prepared to spend a wonderful time enjoying this magnificent story. I'll leave you a review every now and then but I'll try to keep it short, because there are so many nuances and aspects I would love to comment about this story that I could go on and on for ages and you would probably get a bit bored with me.

Well, before leaving it for now I'll say that I loved this chapter, where the story really gets started (although the prologue helps a lot to create intrigue), in such an abrupt and painful way...

OH MY GOD, YAY!

I am just so, so very impressed with the world you've created here, the details you've filled in. The scope and breadth of creatures and the folklore you've included is *amazing*. I especially enjoyed the Fairy Folk. Blue steel, yay! This story is just. Amazing. As is the relationship between Peter and Edmund. o/ *flails at you* Such love and joy, and Aslan! Aslan. :D It's all so much in the spirit of the Narnia books.

And now I will go read the companion fic.

You have taken C.S. Lewis's Narnia and created a magical land and creatures of your own in this magnificent epic. The past four hours have been as an enchantment as I travelled in this world of yours and I was moved to tears at several points -- there are just too many parts to count that thoroughly moved me. Simply beautiful. A most heartfelt thank you for this incredible journey, and I feel sure I'll be re-visiting this and your other fics.
