Atropos' Knife 2006-09-19 . chapter 1Hello Zan! Many apologies offered for the kinda late review. I swear, my home PC now has a dust bunny for a pet - it's been that long since I switched it on and visited this section.
Ahem. Anyway... ^^
'May I look kindly upon your words' you ask? Don't worry, I look with great fondness and awe. It's rare lately to find a GB fic that's as quietly subdued and poignant in its simplicity as this. With all the dangerous adventuring going on in the series, fans tend to overlook how the boys do in fact enjoy the odd lazy afternoon at the Honky Tonk. And I can imagine the good Doctor does, too, albeit more inconspicuously.
Ah, and speaking of the devil, you are right; hardcore fans may read this and think how OOC Jackal tends to be in this story, how he never would've been so soft-hearted and thawed-out with Charlotte. But, in reality, you don't realize how close to human you portrayed him without stepping into actual OOC. And what makes your characterization more surprising is the fact you haven't read the manga and only parts of the anime.
Because it IS canon fact that Akabane has an affinity for children, and that his only remaining shred of humanity is rooted in his regret (guilt?) for not saving a particular young boy in his past.
That's why I don't find it hard at all to believe how Akabane acted the way he did around Charlotte as though trapped in an ephemeral bubble where BOTH of their innocences could exist even for just a little while. Of course, the bubble eventually pops and Jackal becomes Jackal again, but at least we experience a warp in space-time where we are allowed a glimpse of the man he used to (and maybe still can) be.
All-in-all, this is a wonderfully written and paced atmospheric piece about a calm before the many storms ahead. The descriptions are lovely (you can almost hear the footfalls on the floorboards and smell the decaying autumn leaves) and the character interactions are easy and unforced. Reading this story is like reading between the lines where much of the pleasure is garnered in guessing the delicious thoughts in each character's mind that are cleverly unwritten and only hinted at. Bravo!
And it's an honor for me to have lent my plushie to your fic. Though really, you've made the doll yours (and Charlotte's!) to which I willingly relinquish possession ^_^. In closing, you've got a gorgeous little GB first effort here and I hope there will be more up your sleeve one day, inspiration permitting.
Great job! It's such a joy to find such an uncomplicated, non-romantic gen piece for once in this section and writers like you keep readers like me coming back for more - no matter how few and far between the gems are to be found lately.
Hope you keep writing, reviewing and keeping the GB fandom alive. :D
Cheers! |
 Ame Mika'zuki 2006-09-12 . chapter 1I must say, Charlotte is adorably cute~ ^_^
and this fic is really pretty, very elegantly written..
the descriptions are.. soothing, too. XD this may sound really really WEIRD but that's their effect on me. XD
Been a long time, Narrizan-san!! ;P |
Ditch Gospel 2006-09-11 . chapter 1Oh, I didn't expect you to finish and post this so soon!
Okay, you already know that I have no idea what the GetBackers is about, or even what the characters look like or anything, but I have to say, after reading this, that this Dr.Jackal character seems VERY COOL, in a nice dark, kind of creepy and semi-sinsiter way.
But you know, I think I've been reading way too much Saiyuki. I just couldn't help but think of Goku when I read this part:
"He hoped fervently that she kept her innocence about the world. Ginji had. Somehow he had regained or would that be retained - his hold on his beliefs? Even with his darker and more deliciously dangerous alter ego residing in him. Ginji was still Ginji."
I love the way you style these little pieces of yours. Beautifully and softly descriptive, with an elegant interlacing of character insight, they're like little snapshots of a moment.
Now are you going to have S. draw a pic to go with this? ^_~ |
