MidnightWhisper7 2007-04-18 . chapter 1I've just started reading this web comic, and this was the first fanfiction I've read for it (linked to from the fanfic section of the No Rest website). A nice choice, too. It's an interesting topic to write about, or at least an interesting scene.
"In the instant that she delivers the killing blow, Red sees time collapse."
That's a great opening line. It certainly drew me in. (I think that's one of your talents, the first line). The atmosphere of this story reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe, with the descriptions of death and blood and the mysteries of the grave. I was reading it at night and almost shivered with the feeling of the words. They're very drawn together, just enough to let the reader see what is happening.
Another aspect I enjoyed was the exposition of Red's character. Instead of a harsh axe-woman, she is given weakness, vulnerability, and is very much the little girl eaten by the wolf. I also enjoyed the descriptions of November. Now I think I understand her name: she is like a cool refreshing November wind, and I exactly had that impression here.
The last three lines are especially poignant. Because even though Red may act like a beast sometimes, she is still terribly human. And it's the human struggle, human emotions, that are expressed so well in your story.
Anyway, well-done, and I apologize for the lengthy review. :) |
