It's good to see this updated :) I still have some hope for one story which would keep a happy ending for Phaere... I especially liked the part at the end where you explain the illithid's interference with the geas and how it allowed Phaere to remember her love for Solaufein.

Hmm.. Like it more with every chapter... Although I must say I hope you will continue the tragic path - Phaere dying and Solaufein (while learning the truth in the end) leaving with Charname's party. Not Jessime, no. This story is an alternative universe, isn't it? So you could take a shot with your, *better* Solaufein romance. While the original Weimer's one isn't bad it is far from perfect... I am quite sure you could do better! And if the Bhaalspawn here would be a surface elf.. Just think of all the great inner conflict and hard-earned trust! This would be a v. nice story indeed.

Of course if you have chosen to let Phaere live I will just have to accept it and enjoy the story nevertheless!

Just as a wild guess, I'm assuming that Solaufein is Amaleari's son?

You really have a talent for developping characters in a believable way... Your evolution of Solaufein is real nice. I also particularly like how you wrote the part of the story that we never get to see in the game: how Solaufein got to discover Phaere's machinations, and how he framed her (or attempted to... -worriedly- he won't REALLY kill her off, will he?).

Anyway, nice to see this story bounding back up your list of updated fanfiction :) Keep writing :)

This story is still as good as it was; I'm really looking forward to more and to see if Ardulace's prediction that Solaufein's love will turn to hate will be realized.

As for the geas, the difference between BG and NWN is the 2nd and 3rd editon of the ruleset. In the 2nd, the person had to be willing to undergo the geas, while in the 3rd, it's not, and in the 3rd edition, you don't die outright for disobey it, you just lose a debilitating amount of hp/day (and maybe some form of stat curse, I'm not sure). Anyway, I never mind people going slightly off cannon :)

I swear, I felt a tear in my left eye. I feel sorry for both of them. You are an expert at drawing emotions. Bloody geas...

Poor Phaere. Poor Sola. (I have a feeling I'll be saying this just about every chapter...)

Beautifully done, but still very sad :( The drow ways of manipulation are shining through nicely, I see.

Will there be a second chapter?

What can I say? Frightening Matron Mother, genuinely likeable Phaere who elicits sympathy when she's caught, and a sinister ending, vaguely hinting at the horrors to come :(

O_O You got me hooked. THis is a favorite already, and I'll have to keep myself updated on this one too now. :) Great fic, I'm scared of Ardulace actually - I also hate her even more than before, AND you actually fleshed out her character very well.

Just one thing that puzzles me (I could be wrong on this): I thought a geas required the one being put under it to actually promise something outloud? Or some kind of oath specifically made by the person - like Yoshimo did for Irenicus? Can't remember really, but it bugs me a bit. I think Bioware or blizzard has some info on the geas spell somewhere on one of their websites. You might want to look it up.

Aside from that, it would definitely explain Phaere's attitude, since her will can't be broken (a month with the Handmaidens? Wow.)
