Lord Sia 2009-09-01 . chapter 2I agree on just about everything you say. Great fic, love it, although I'd like to add that while anger and fear are the most common instigators of uncontrolled bursts of "accidental" magic, strong emotion is the actual trigger. Harry being overwhelmed with love, sadness, happiness etc should have some magical effect, especially given how strong he is. That the effect is subtle, rather than the vulgar and obvious "breaking glass/flickering light/hurricane out of nowhere", ok, so be it. But it should still be there, to point out the counterpoint to the "Dark Arts".
The temptation is not that the Dark Arts are more powerful, it is that they are more obvious. That, and humans, being egocentric by nature, generally find it easier to attack than defend. What protected Harry was the opposite of a Killing Curse; the desire to see another dead made manifest by magic. Whether it was an actual spell cast by his mother (most likely) or simply Harry's considerable magical power acting according to his similarly powerful survival instinct (makes for a good Super-Harry), that is up to the individual author. Another example, Harry's Patronus. Fuelled by "good" emotions, Harry drove off a hundred Dementor's not protecting himself directly, but indirectly (Making any sense? It was his future self, acting to protect his past self and Godfather, who drove off the Soulsuckers; ie, not his desire to Survive, but to Protect).
I'm rambling. Great fic, keep it coming.
PS; And for the record, Animagus is Awesome. |
polyrhythm 2009-08-03 . chapter 2 This reviewer is of the belief that fan-fiction is meant to expand the world of Harry Potter. By writing, we explore other possibilities and fill blank spots. Without JKR, there wouldn't be a Harry Potter World to expand.
Having said all that, I am compelled to say one more thing; I too, despise the canon pairings, but I hate the way the relationships develop even more. |
 ARedHair 2009-06-15 . chapter 2A lovely rant - and I totally agree.
The books are filled with cliches and exaggerations that defy any attempt to build a consistent world view. To paraphrase a forum post I once read (withoug noteing the author): HP is children's fiction that has the misfortune to be judged by the standards of adult literature.
The best "explanation" I've found is that the books are pure fiction extrapolated from bits and pieces of rumour that has strayed from the facts.
That doesn't lessen my pleasure in reading (and concurring with) your well written rant. I'm sorry you haven't continued your subsequent story, I was looking forward to reading your continued dissection Wizarding society as you picked up its pieces.
ps Contracts was great, too. |
