Roswalyn 2008-05-06 . chapter 7I absolutely LOVED this chapter -- it was well worth the wait!! At first, when the kids were whispering, I was seriously afraid that they would make fun of George. But then, when they asked if she was a super-hero, I just wanted to hug them. Kids are just so surprisingly accepting sometimes -- even more so than adults. Where adults would feel sympathy or pity for George, kids can see her disability as something fascinating and find the good in it. And even though they were asking George if she was a fictional character, I loved how the conversation actually gave her something to look into, and more importantly, look forward to. She may not be Barbara Gordon, but she's a strong woman, and it was good to see that she realizes that she hasn't lost that quality just because she's in a wheelchair.
I must say, throughout the course of this story, you've really made me have a whole new appreciation for George's character, beyond anything that I've felt for her in the books. Of Nancy's two friends, I always used to enjoy Bess' character more, simply because she was funnier and more vivacious. But you've given George a depth here that we never got to see in the books, but is still perfectly in-character for her. Which just goes to show what an amazing writer you are, and I sincerely hope that you get a chance to update again soon! |
Fflur Cadwgawn 2008-04-28 . chapter 7Yay, you finally updated! I was beginning to think you'd gone into hibernation :p
Great chapter. I was surprised, not to mention pleasantly pleased (since a lot of kids can be pretty nasty about any disability that sticks out, including eyeglasses), that the kids gave George a new way to see herself. |
lightwarai 2008-04-28 . chapter 7OH MY GOSH!! I LOVE YOU!
I know exactly who Oracle is! I guess it's partly due to the short lived "Birds of Prey" show that was on a few years ago. But I have always loved the Oracle storyline. She was definitely a characer I could become obsessed with easily.
Oh sorry, this is about George. I NEVER thought about George this way, but it makes absolute perfect sense. George is so amazing.. and I love the way she was just given this new idea. This chapter was wonderful!
I love kids, and they can certainly turn something "silly" into something life-changing. This was so great!
I am glad you posted a new chapter, and I can't wait to see more! Wonderful job! |
DarkMark 2008-04-28 . chapter 7Well, it's good to see another Nancy Drew-related story from you, and I guess this is the only way we'll be communicating these days. Interesting you made the comparison of George to Oracle. In Denny O'Neil's stories (written or edited by him), there are a lot of wheelchair-bound women that I remember (Carol Ferris for awhile in Green Lantern, Daredevil's secretary, and, yes, Oracle, who got that way in an Alan Moore story). So I guess George follows in that line. |
 Lily312 2008-02-29 . chapter 1Good story. Me like |
Roswalyn 2007-10-16 . chapter 6You're so sneaky! Here I was, harassing you for a new chapter just a few days ago, and you didn't even tell me you had this little gem in the works! But it's okay, I forgive you, because this chapter more than makes up for it :)
As always, you've written George's emotions wonderfully -- her fears of leaving the security of the rehabilitation center behind, the comfort in seeing the home she grew up in, and her trepidation at seeing her friends and their reactions to her. It was great to have Burt and Dave make an appearance, albeit briefly -- all too often, they're forgotten in the ND universe. You used their characters in a great context -- not as romantic involvements, but as old friends who are not pitying George, but rather making improvements to her home to make things easier for her and her family. And Jon -- what a beautiful, lovely scene. When he asked George if he could hold her, I just about melted. And George's hesitation about how he would view her with her disability was so heart-breaking, just as his assertion that he loves her for her was so uplifting. George's comment at the end about Nancy and Bess being the beautiful ones really struck a chord -- I never thought about it that way, but it really is true that the writers always portrayed Nancy and Bess as more the type to attract guys. George had her share of attractions, but they were always to the same type of guy -- rugged and athletic. Not that Jon doesn't somewhat fit that profile, but to hear him tell her that he saw her as beautiful was just great.
As usual, this was a wonderful chapter, and I'm so happy that you're back to writing. I can't wait for more! |
lightwarai 2007-10-15 . chapter 6You have no idea how happy I was this morning to see this new update! I'm so glad I waited until tonight to read. Today has been the WORST day. (This has actually been a pretty bad three or four days.) I've cried all day.. and now ... I'm crying again! I love George! I'm so so so impressed with her determination to keep a positive attitude. I don't know that I could have done the same. Coming home to old friends and places.. but everything being so different. I'm not a strong person.. but George certainly gives a girl something to aspire to.
I can't tell you how wonderful it was to see Burt and Dave! Their appearances were certainly fleeting.. but I think it's super-fitting to let them be the guys who helped make such permanent changes to George's life. It was a thrill. and I hope that's not the last we'll ever see of them. (and I'm talking to all fanfic writers, here!)
Jon certainly surprised me in the end.. but I'm thrilled at his conversation with George.
And I just have to ask... are you going to do anything about Nancy's revelation at the end of Who is that Girl? about the shooting and George? Part of me hopes you do.. but part of me hopes you don't.
Anyway... this was a wonderful chapter! I'm so glad to see you're back into writing... and I'm so glad you're back after everything. GREAT JOB! |
Anne Davies 2007-10-15 . chapter 6 I was practically jumping up and down when I saw you'd updated this. For some odd reason, every time I read this fic I keep repeating that old song, "Georgie Girl" in my head. Gushing aside, great chapter, can't wait (as usual) for an update. |
lightwarai 2007-06-24 . chapter 5Wow!! HUGE KUDOS TO YOU!
I loved this chapter. This really gave great insight to the beginnings of what George and her family/friends would really have to deal with now that she is confined to a wheelchair. I love what you wrote about her mother, how she is making it her mission to know and to be able to do everything that would be required of her, without having to be pushed or prodded. That just shows how wonderful George's mother is, and how well George has been raised.
I love the scene with Bess. I love the explanation of Bess's recent behavior towards Nancy (especially with all the great details regarding "Who's That Girl?"). And I love the playful relationship between the cousins. You brought that out realistically without it being.. silly or over-the-top.
I love George's resolution at the end. How she is now more determined to be able to defend herself, confined to the chair. I"m so excited to read more!!
I hope you are doing well, and I hope that you'll forgive me for taking so long to review. Take care of yourself and I'm praying for you! :) |
Roswalyn 2007-06-21 . chapter 5Can I just tell you how happy I am that you updated? With this story, you continue to give us painfully insightful glimpses into what the effects are on a healthy, athletic young girl who is now bound to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. In addition, you seamlessly weaved in references to the mystery of Who's that Girl?, with Bess' obsession of figuring out what happened to Nancy (and how close she actually was to the truth). I loved the scene between Bess and George at the end -- George was absolutely right: this is the old Bess we all know and love. Hearing George refer to herself as a 'gimp' was painful to read, but knowing that she was kidding about it helped. And even if she hadn't said it entirely in jest, I think it certainly fits with her frame of mind at that stage in her recovery. She's still trying to wrap her brain around this massive change in her life, and it's natural for her to get down on herself at times, no matter how strong she is. As always, you're brilliant in how you portray this struggle that she's facing. Wonderful job, TesubCalle! |
nancy fan 2007-06-18 . chapter 5really enjoyed the chapter! loved the george bess interaction. good to see you back! |
 DementedLeaf 2007-02-20 . chapter 4Aw...
In the story after this, it doesn't actually say Bess survived, that I saw, anyway.
I suppose that's what I get for apparently reading this series backwards. |
katie janeway 2007-02-15 . chapter 4George is...wow. A pillar of strength, and I have no clue how she's doing it. Again, I say it - I love your portrayal of George, and the time and thought you're clearly putting into this, to make sure things flow right/are factually correct/etc. |
shadowme 2006-11-27 . chapter 4I like the way you write. your real good. Update. |
lightwarai 2006-11-20 . chapter 3Yes, yes, bad girl I am.
I really enjoyed this chapter, and appreciate the background you created for George. My eyes watered while she thought about her life pre-shooting. I can picture her exactly as you wrote, and it was perfectly acceptable and believeable.
I am glad that you are taking this step by step, so that George's character can develop in time, and in the timeline with Nancy's disappearance/death/reappearance and such.
This is a great chapter/shortie, and I am really really enjoying it! |
