xJustAnotherDreamerx 2009-02-15 . chapter 1I totally agree. My favorite pokemon is machop/machoke/machamp. And geodude and steelix are in my favorites too! Honestly, I never really thought whether or not that pokemon was sexist until I read this, and you know what, it kind of is... Good story! |
Invisible-chan 2008-09-22 . chapter 1I completely agree with you. The girls tend to have the annoyingly flowery, pink Pokemon. I have nothing against these Pokemon, but when the girls in the game used them, they were shown weaker than they are. Jasmine is one of my favorite trainers. I can't quite agree that she is the only girl with "manly" Pokemon though. Sabrina has psychics, Janine had poisonous bugs, and Agatha(from first gen) had ghosts. You can only place the sexism on generic trainers.
Anyways, your fic was pretty awesome. Stupid Chuck, I kicked his but. Personally, one of my favorite Pokemon is Tyrannirar which to me seems like on of the "manliest" Pokemon from second gen. |
Blob the Blob 2008-08-27 . chapter 1I know what you you mean. It's annoying and rather sexist.
I THINK it may be because it's a show/game orginally designer for boys, but the DOESN'T MAKE IT RIGHT.
Lol, I shoould stop before I start a rant.
I enjoyed your story, thank you! |
The Cupcake Master 2008-08-15 . chapter 1It's horrid, most female npc's have either really feminine pokemon that don't know any good fighting moves,or there just really weak pokemon.
The anime is even worse, female pokemon are all...Feminine,and female trainers are too happy...And don't get me started on contests *_*'
Jasmine?Oh,I remember her,the girl that you meant on the beach near victory road in Diamond! She seems pretty cool. I heard she enters contest with her Steelix "Rusty",but I haven't seen her yet. That girl likes to go to different regions XD She can be seen in the background of Contests in hoenn!
... :) Now,I'm going to catch a female Machop and a male Steelix for no particular reason XD
... :) Weird, the shinnoh female gym leaders seem tougher then in the other regions, they even seem harder then the male gym leaders XD They must be under Cynthia's influence! |
Baiorin 2008-02-27 . chapter 1I agree with you, its total extreme discrimination!I catch those weakling grass & water types 4 the sake of completing the pokedex!Hell, I use Charizards, blazikens n lots more!i like ghost types 2! dats y i want 2 be a racer so i can prove them not all girls are 'girly'! |
Bobbins 2007-12-02 . chapter 1Dude I totally agree! My latest team, from Diamond, is a Infernape named Yao Li, a Staraptor named Fuu, a Luxray named Zhu Feng, an Onix named Chi Wong, a Floatzel named Soi Fong, and Dialga, named Xin. ( all of which have levles in the forties or higher)
so yeah, none of mine are too girly.
love the fic, by the way! |
 toucanmel94 2007-11-15 . chapter 1I am with you all the way! |
 neogirl7900 2007-08-20 . chapter 1Auugh, true...
At least the games aren't as sexist as the anime...
I guess it doesn't really bother me that much though... they may have cute Pokemon, but female Trainers aren't any easier to beat than male trainers. And if the Pokemon world were real, I wouldn't be surprised if real girls who were Trainers but not particularly serious Trainers would tend to choose to train cute Pokemon... after all, real girls tend to like cute animals. Of course there would be exceptions, as there are exceptions in the real world... but there are exceptions in the games too... like with CoolTrainers and May and such.
As for the "professional" female Trainers, they don't really train girly Pokemon...
But overall, I agree yeah... I've been ticked off at the sexism in Pokemon myself. It's gotten better though. Thank goodness for characters like Cynthia, Yellow, Lucy Fleetfoot, ect... :) |
Bittersweet Romanticide 2007-04-15 . chapter 1YEAH! FIght the system!
I always used to hate that boys would start laughing when I asked if I could play, well, anything with violence. Pokemon, Yugioh, football, anything that i actually thought was fun! Then, when I ended up beating them, what do they do? Accuse me of cheating. Or say that they were going easy on me or that I just got lucky. It drove me nuts!
On top of all of that, I LIKE the cute AND ugly pokemon. Heck, my strongest was an Umbreon I trained to level onehundred that kicked butt!
To throw in what they do in the show, you're absolutely right. Almost every girl is a pansy, or evil. They took Misty off the show because people complained she was too violent! But it's perfectly fine for boys to attack each other, to go jump into danger! (unless they're evil, of course.)
Nice story! |
 TheFreya 2007-04-02 . chapter 1*Claps* I agree heartily, Sapphire!
I remember when boys used to laugh if I asked for a battle, and they kept asking me where I got my Typhlosion/Blastoise/Blaziken from.
"Don't girls like the cute ones? Y'know, like Bulbasaur and stuff? I thought you'd have chosen the grass starter."
That kinda thing makes me want to hit someone. Hard.
Now I don't know anyone except my best friend who'll battle me, 'cause Pokemon's so 'Babyish LOLZORZ'. My best friend's never discriminated like that, thank god.

^-^ 2007-02-19 . chapter 1 Hehe...I agree. Pokemon is very sexist. Not only do females have "girly pokemon", but practically all female characters have short-sleeved shirts and short skirts/shorts. I guess that's why they had to make "battle girls" in Ruby/Sapphire. |
teh queen of randomness 2007-01-03 . chapter 1 I agree! I have a level 100 Swampert (she's a girl, but only for breeding purposes) and a level 62 Flygon a level 45 Exploud and more... I think it's discrimination! |
Nyaa-Neko 2006-12-29 . chapter 1Interesting story. I have to say, I've been fully aware about sexism in Pokemon for awhile...it bugged me at first, and still does, but Pokemon is one of those things you have to accept with a grain of salt. No, wait, make that ten grains of salt, maybe more. But that's what you get from having a male team working on it in Japan, and targeting it at elementary school-aged boys. Those are three huge strikes against it.
Granted, I think that some girls still have varying opinions on what constitutes as "girly" and what doesn't. Personally, I seem to think that many dark types and dragon types are, in fact, quite girly, or at least so popular towards girls (and Mary Sue authors), that they can never be defined as anything non-girly. That goes towards Arcanine, Houndoom, Umbreon (all the Eeveelutions, really), and many of the Pokemon mentioned in the reviews as proof that they weren't girly. ^_^;; So I think Karen and Clair really don't prove anything that way.
Of course, I agree with the fact that Jasmine is the best break-against-the-norm ever. Not only was she a highly leveled gym leader late in the game, but she had very un-girly Pokemon. Steelix? No, that will not be girly until fangirls worship it. Same goes for Magnemite. I think she also proves a good point in that she dresses like a typical girly-girl, with the dainty little sundress and the cute hair. Well, before she pwnz all the non-fire-types and non-fighting-types, that is. XD
Now, about the story itself...it was a bit hard to understand who was talking all the time. I think you also split people's dialogue into separate paragraphs without proper punctuation, making it difficult to follow. You should add more descriptive sentences. The battles could benefit from this as well, offering more than just "Steelix KO'ed itself." Also, you should vary your sentence structure. You pretty much start off all the descriptive sentences as "Sanga..." or "Jasmine..."
Other than that, it wasn't really bad, or anything. The message behind it was great.

WhiteStar the Undecided 2006-12-23 . chapter 1I completly agree with you. Just because someones a girl doesn't mean we HAVE to have girly pokemon. I mean look at ME! I love Onixs and Arboks, Machokes and Houndooms, Magmars and Scythers! As well as the cute ones like Pikachus and Ekans, Oddishes and Growlithes, Magbys and Meowths. Its like gender racisem or something. I mean come on! I mean when i look at a Machoke i see a really cute human like pokemon. He He sorry got off topic^^'. Well anyway love your story and I hope you continue.BYE!!*smiles, waves, and waits patiently* |
GreenBinderGirl 2006-11-25 . chapter 1You are totally right man! A lot of the pokemon I have are boy-like, as you said...Zubat, Totodile, Geodude, etc. In Gold Version I made my guy catch a bunch of girl-like pokemon...it's funny when he battles other guys with a Jigglypuff and a Chikorita! =D I'd add this story to my favourite's list but I can't add any more T_T |
