2008-05-18 . chapter 1
Hello Katia-chan,
First of all, i want to say that i'm a big fan of your fanfics and your writing style.
About this fanfic in question. I'm not a Ren's fan but you captured her character very well and the song from Les Miserables really suits her relationship with Akira.
Thank you for your attention,
Alana

*PS: This fanfic is in my C2*

This is… such an incredibly perfect song. Damnit. Inspiration particles sleeting through the universe are being channeled directly to Katia’s brain! Wow. So much love. Never would have thought of this. And now I’m going to listen to you singing the song while I read. Ultimate ecstasy.

“She had never felt more beautiful in her entire life”, which is such a beautiful line, to “It was the best revenge she could have ever dreamed” a few breaths later - just brilliant. Plain realistic on one level, because yeah, no human is going to not be thinking about that. And on another, it makes all of us cringe, because we’re seeing shades of what she’s going to turn into… but it’s not FAIR. She didn’t HAVE to, you know? Something you are illustrating quite heartbreakingly well here without my whinging, but… not fair. It just isn’t.

“Their life would be perfect, because that was just how it was meant to be, and she would stand to have it no other way.”
- Such a lovely, lovely combination of blushing bride and the woman inside who honestly could run the Sohma family all on her onesy - between the two halves of the sentence, and then again in the last half, which could be plain Grr-Ren, but is also naïve in its belief that because she wants it, and is willing to do anything to get it, it will be hers, kind of thing - you know? Gosh I love you.

“And watched the joyful face of a bride turn into the hard face of a widow.”
- Um… you have abruptly called to mind Snow White. Darn. Now I’m going to be obsessing over turning Fruits Basket into various fairy tales.

“And they told her she was lucky.”
- Oh. So much… well, hate, actually. You are so evil. God I love that line. Such a perfect, understated, wonderful way to end it. The best part of the entire fic. Except… for the spin. I saved that for last. Because it is too very much of a… I don’t even know. But Ren, so happy and young and SPINNING because of it… Someone draw me this. You are, again, brilliant.

Yay, revenge. Akito's pretty justified in hating Ren for the female traits of jealousy, sneakiness, and vengefulness. Nevermind that Akito learned it from her. And all the other girls whom Akito is punishing actually don't have these subtle motives.

"Everything had to be perfect, because it was the marriage of the head of the family. Even if it was to a seductive whore. Circumstances didn’t matter; all that was important was that the Souma tradition of grandeur was upheld." The Soumas are extremely self-defeating in that regard...

"She knew what they were saying about her, knew how they viewed this day, and that made her even happier, because she was no longer required to care." Vengeful jealous woman traits, and then Ren has her freedom. Ren doesn't have to care, because she is above them now and she is safe.

"She had found the love of her life in Akira-san, and that was something they couldn’t take away from her. No one could." Ah the irony. Bitter irony.

"She was certain this would last forever. Nothing could spoil it.
Nothing." Very cruel irony. Is this why she is so adamant that the bonds and eternity do not exist?

"They would live together for a long time; Akira-san’s health would improve now that she was with him. He had been so alone and so sad before, but she would change that; she would make him happy and well. That was the duty of a wife after all." And the rest of the family doesn't see that she's not totally stuck-up about marrying Akira, determined to get out of her position by marrying higher than herself and then using it to her advantage... she genuinely wants to help Akira. She still wants to serve him, just in the ultimate way--as his wife.

"Their life would be perfect, because that was just how it was meant to be, and she would stand to have it no other way."

"And they told her she was lucky." The irony makes me want to cry for Ren...
