Poor Kaoru really has had to give up everything for this experience. I wonder if Kenshin really has any appreciation of what he has done to her yet. In the last chapter he seemed to understand better than she did that her life in the village is over but he didn't exactly seemed overly concerned about it. His own arrogance protects him from that right now but I can't imagine he won't feel more guilty as he gets to know her.
Yahiko being introduced now seems like a bad omen since he knows Kaoru and will clearly remember which train she got on. When he gets back to the village and hears about the escape, he will know where to send any soldiers after them.
As for Kaoru, a girl with a hard yet sheltered life, I like how she continues to try to understand the wider world. Her thought that she 'owes' Kenshin for taking her to the train station was quite amusing but said a lot about her. I like the way you brought her to a point where she is willing to go along with Kenshin at least for now in the hopes of living and in her debt to him for getting her started on doing so.

Hooray, this story has not been forsaken! Once again this story's plot is so good! This chapter really had the relationship between Kenshin and Kaoru evolving too- though it may backstep after the seeing of Enishi! Your writing level, as always, was superb. The story IS AU so the trains cant be considered incorrect. I'm waiting the next update!
