storm2011 2009-09-18 . chapter 22I read the first story, and it left me wanting to read more. This story is great, and you are a great writer. PLEASE finish this story! If you don't want to finish the story after two years I understand, but could you mention that in your bio? Thanks. |
Sarah 2009-09-14 . chapter 22 I know its almost futile to ask if your gonna update this story, but no harm trying. I'm new to the whole Avatar thing, so I've been doing a lot reading on Zutara. Being really picky on what I read, I'm sad to say there arent many good writers out there that are able to capture the characters the way you did. This story is by far the best i've read through out almost every fanfiction page i can look into. I do hope you're not wasting this story by leaving it at that. If not i do hope that I'll be able to catch up with any of your other works. You really have a great gift with words. Thanks for the wonderful read. |

Fleur DM 2009-07-05 . chapter 22So, I've just marathoned Somewhere in Between and this story. I gotta say, you've got a heck of a way with words. This is probably one of the most engaging pieces of fanfiction I've ever read. The characterizations are extraordinary, and for the most part, there's very little grammatical error. The plot is engaging and intricate to a degree I don't find often in fan fics. Also, the slow build-up of Zuko's and Katara's romance is just splendid. Like frosting on the awesome-cake.
I can only say that I hope this gets updated, because it would be a shame to let this story end here. You're an exceptional wordsmith, and I've literally been glued to my chair reading what you've created here. |
 HeartofFire-SoulofWater 2009-05-28 . chapter 22Ugh I want more! MORE MORE MORE! PLEASE!

PARAD0X 2009-05-28 . chapter 22Oh, I do hope that you continue this story! I love the plot so much, the court intrigue and the political games are very plausible. Your characterization, especially of Azula, is really spot-on. However, the pace of the story is a little too slow for my liking, especially in the beginning. It didn't stop me from rushing to the most recent chapter though! |
Cantare 2009-05-13 . chapter 22I apologize for not reviewing chapters as I went along, but I was just too impatient to read what was going to happen next.
I read Somewhere in Between and this story almost back to back with a short rest in between. They are both amazing, and you deserve every bit of praise from all your reviewers. I like a lot of things about your writing, so I guess I'll hit on the general stuff first:
Complicated plot. It's very rare to see the depth of complexity and political maneuvering in a fanfic. I'm really impressed. Have you done research into Imperial China or any kind of royal family? Zuko's fears of being seen as illegitimate or weak are very real, and the fact that all his servants are looking out for themselves and trying to get ahead is a perfect reflection of court life. And you expertly portrayed this all through an outsider's eyes, through Katara, in your first story, which was an excellent device to introduce your readers to the intricate web of the Fire Palace. I like how the plot flows together and you mix emotions, devotion to family, and other more personal themes together with the cold political machinations and plots. Finally, the fact that you can juggle so many characters and plotlines at the same time is very impressive. Writing both Zuko and Sokka in this story must not be easy, considering how you have to keep the pacing just right and make sure one doesn't get too far ahead of the other. You disclose each 'surprise' with just enough punch but don't overload the reader all at once, spreading out the suspense over many chapters. I can only imagine how much planning you had to put in to this story before you wrote.
Second, characterizations. I loved Avatar the show, but one thing that always kind of annoyed me was the immaturity of the characters since they were children. One reason I turn to fanfiction is to see a more mature perspective from them. Most fanfics seem to have the characters only a few years older, like just barely legal (for smut purposes). But I appreciate that you've made them into real adults, and they're much more mature, calculating, and responsible than their teenage selves. Zuko has settled into his role nicely as a solemn leader, Sokka isn't just a smart prankster anymore but an efficient and more ruthless genius, Katara is still fiery and rebellious but willing to make sacrifices and hold back her own opinions in order to keep peace. Adding Zuko's children to the mix was really effective too in bringing out the parental sides of both Zuko and Katara, showing they really were no longer teenagers and acted like a real father and mother would. Of course, Azula was done very well, calculating and cold, untrustworthy and relentless. I've kind of missed seeing her in this second story but I trust she will show up very soon.
Character psychology. I feel like these are real people with real problems and worries. I especially enjoy reading from Zuko's point of view, his fears for his people and his genuine desire to keep his country safe and strong, and his strong instinct to protect his family, even when he and Katara didn't really get along. When she was poisoned, he really showed how much he cared and how paranoid he was that this would be a repeat of Mai's death. At the same time, while you show his weakness, you also give him plenty of strong moments where he asserts his authority and isn't afraid of anyone. He's a very well rounded character. Same thing with Katara, Sokka, Toph, everyone.
Finally, one of the more specific aspects of this story. I am somewhat of a Zutara fan and am so happy to find a fic that doesn't rush their romance but keeps it realistic and slow-paced. It was perfect how you built up their feelings for each other and made them walk a thorny path before they finally fell in love and consummated their marriage. Neither of them ever acted out of character or overly sentimental. Their relationship is defined by mutual respect and trust, not just by passion. I actually prefer the respect and trust over the romance because it's more appropriate for an older couple, and both partners have been through a lot in life, no longer the sparkly eyed teens they once were.
I have plenty more to say about this fic but I'm afraid I don't have time to write more in this review. I notice that you haven't updated in two years and I'm a little saddened by that. Like other readers who have reviewed, I would love to see an update and find out what will happen to all these awesome characters, how Katara will handle the navy and what Toph and Ty Lee are doing on the ship. I understand if you're too busy to write or have lost interest, but I would really appreciate it if you could reply and let me (or other readers) know if you plan to continue the story. Thanks so much for an amazing read. |
