Karmira 2009-10-20 . chapter 22I am absolutely amazed by this story I found on a whim. I've read the entire story in one night quite happily and unaware of anything else. At the beginning, you admitted to not being Jane Austen and just spinning a story. This is a wonderful story! But more than that it is in the world of Austen.
I get to see most of my favorite characters from Pride and Prejudice in fresh ways. I love Darcy's nature now, especially when his friend is telling him about his own troubles in love which brings back some of his own memories with Lizzy. The scene with Lord Eddie through his young eyes is also adorable but bitter, too. like some of Darcy's own high class memories.
I find it both hilarious and vexing that Caroline Bingley (Gorton) shifts her insults to Mary. Mary's attacks to Gorton is as equal but in different ways as her sister Lizzy, finally using books and other studies to clever conventions, if a bit sassy, too. (Wink*) I only wish I saw more of the Bingley couple.
Mary's character, once removed from the shadows of Pride and Prejuidce, is very fun, and of different spirit than the other women, still truely worthy of Austen's own heroines. (Although it makes me feel bad at first for my own treatment of her when reading P+P.) The form of two different, one deserving but difficult gentleman and another deceiving, charming rake courting her is also familiar to a Jane Austen fanatic.
By far my favorite Jane Austen continuity in this tale is your spinning of a new theme that is still apparent in the other Austen works, but not the main theme or argument, image versus true beauty. The way you handle this is both harshly revealing and endearing, as with Lord Eddington's gentle, patient nature around the orphan children. The way you use the pick up phrase "one in a million" is fantastic and not cliché.
I hope you write more very soon, and I'll stop talking until I review your next installment. |
