abuseWhat a wonderful glimpse of that time before and immediately after Sam went away to school.

++His hand reaches in his pocket, taking the ignition keys out, handing them to Dean. His hand is warm.

“She’s yours now,” he says and laughs when Dean hugs him hard.

“You’re old enough now, Dean,” John says growing serious. He shrugs. Doesn’t say anything else, but Dean doesn’t need it. The shrug is eloquent. The shrug says Here’s a car so you can drive up and see your brother. Make sure he’s okay, cuz it’s been months.

“You’ll start hunting on your own soon enough,” John says after a while, not looking at Dean. “Maybe you’ll want to…go places. You need a car. And…”

He shrugs again. And suddenly Dean realizes it’s not about Sam, or not just about Sam anymore. This is about dad trying not to make anymore mistakes. This is about dad loving Dean and giving him choices.++

This exchange is beautiful and, the very last line above, sums up who I believe John Winchester was, especially to Dean.

Thank-you for writing this story. It is one of the first I favorited since joining ffnet.

abuseI loved this story! Great job with it. It was nice reading Dean's thoughts on John dealing or rather not dealing with Sam's absence. Also it nice to read a story where John isn't potrayed as a drunken jerk.

abuseBeautifully constructed, as usual.

Great job and a wonderful read. I liked this especially: "Serenity after a long, long time"

abuse*amused* So many fics covering this time frame are completely angst-ridden, and while that's not a bad thing, your take on it here is like a breath of fresh air. I love the way you've written Dean and John's relationship - there's so much understanding and camaraderie there, even while there's the little irritants that exist in every relationship. This John and this Dean? I see as having the really close relationship that Ellen had heard about, this John as the guy who's got his issues and really, really loves his kids. It's like ... you've hit the complexity of the Winchesters, but written it in a really simple, understandable way. And I think I've entered the realm of babbling, so I'll stop now.

So anyway, I love it! Have added to favs for many rereads in the future. ;)
