I'm confused. Azula and Sokka are alive, but the two main characters are dead? They can't fall in love if their dead! Unless they aren't born yet.

Sure, Sokka could be born before Katara and it can be perfectly fine, but the yonger sibling can't be born before the older sibling, such is the case with Zuko and Azula.
