Very nice psychological undertones here. It certainly throws light on the person Near really is and how he was once just another kid, too. He is not so detached as he is in canon, obviously, but there's also a certain jaded quality to his character in the future...one that is not here. Not quite yet. It's that innocent touch on Near's portrayal, of how he's teetering on the "edge" and finally decides to "fall", that really gives this fic that character-study-flair.
