When someone that you admire from one fandom shows up in another, it's like casually bumping into people from a different world! There's that initial recognition, followed by the mental "Hey, wait a minute!" moment, followed by abject confusion ("Where the hell am I?"), which is followed by dawning comprehension and then sudden, complete understanding.

And, as usual, the story was just great; characterization spot on, words strung together in a way that leads the reader through perfect heartache, and an all around gorgeous story.
