Evil Riggs 2007-07-10 . chapter 1I don't know why, but I've been browsing through swap stories today at a leisurely pace. This is certainly one of the more interesting and (so far) more tightly-designed of the lot; however, it falls prey to some of the same failings of the others.
The largest problem I've had with the subgenre is that most of them do a thorough job of swapping out characters without ever changing any of the source narrative. The result for me feels listless and not terribly worth reading. After all, I already know the story - why should I go through it again, even if the faces have been changed?
So far, that seems to be the main issue here. You've done a clever and thorough job of switching out characters for another very specific mythos. However, so far there's no indication that these swaps bring anything new to the story itself. Granted, this is early into the story and I haven't seen much of what you're replacing. And some of the replacements are quite nice - I particularly like Apocalypse's substitution for Jenova. I just want to see the switched characters doing more than being new "skins" for the previous characters. If my interest is to be kept, the narrative needs to change.
Good luck as this progresses. |
