I should have known not to make my expectations so high. Here I was thinking this would be a story that borderlines the intensity and depth of the film "Raging Bull". Not so, which is not necessarily a bad thing had the story been better.
The Avalanche starts off sounding like Jake La Motta: bad relationship, insecurities fuel his overconfidence, etc. By the end, he's more philosophical than arrogant, which tells me that this man knows exactly what he's talking about. He is the highlight of the story.
As for the rest, I can't say much for. This is only a short story, but lacks enough detail to support it. The fight is predictable and not at all exciting (but that's not really your fault). Toph shows hints of her true character, but not enough to make her actually worth reading about.
If you revise this story, I suggest you make it a little bit more descriptions. That is in terms of thought, action, and characterization. There is potential here.
P.S. "Raging Bull" is a Martin Scorsese film that I highly recommend to those into movies. |
