First of all, the way this story is formulated left vivid images in my head, a pleasurable change from most other fics. Then, your writing style is kinda.. reminding me of the old-world english charm Agatha Christie mastered within her novels. This is a big compliment! ;)
Somehow, I can't stop imagening the french guide with an eyepatch and a long braid over his shoulders.. *cackling*
No, your story didn't sound cheesy even once, given that -at least as far as I can tell- it has been placed somewhere between the late 1800s to early 1900s. That's my humble guess, at least.
Ah, we need more dignified and intelligent stories like this, which make them look in-character..

Fantastic adventure. I had some (mostly wrong) guesses along the way, but the twists you put in were masterful. The whole story hinged on the vagueness at the beginning and your Seras made the reader care enough to want to know the mysteries.

There were many hidden treasures scattered throughout and the pacing was wonderful. The whole conceit of the journey pushed the pacing along, but the quick tours and the crisis or need to move on that propelled the plot along worked well to keep the journey going.

Really enjoyed your narrative style in this story and look forward to reading your other works as well.

The 18/19 th century setting was also really good. You certainly did your homework with this one!

Strangely I expected the baron to be a bad person who just acted nice. I'm glad he was not. There's still some loose ends but it does not matter.. All is well now.
