| occhi bella 2008-01-26 ch 1, | abuseThis is an amazing one-shot. So well-written and you handled this subject beautifully. I'm not a big fan of the Mulan sequel, but this was an excellent fic based on it. |
| little red lotus 2007-05-16 ch 1, | abuseI actually didn't like Mulan II, but the summary intrigued me so I decided to read. This is really beautifully written and I like the way you portrayed the disillusionment with love that both Mulan and Ting experienced. Very well done. |
| PutMoneyInThyPurse 2007-05-16 ch 1, | abuseOh, wow. You know, when I read the intro to this, I cringed - the way you put it, it sounded as if you were apologizing for the story - but when I read it - wow. I thought the pacing was actually very well done, a lifetime in miniature. I also truly enjoyed the ambiguity, the way you leave a lot unsaid - the prose is sparse, short, elliptical, leaving us to guess, to read between the lines. Like the reference to Shang maybe liking boys. And everything is so - I can't find words - "He stands up to greet her, but they say nothing. She looks at him and sees a life well-led, but lonely. She cannot imagine what he sees." It's the "she cannot iamgine what he sees" that slays me. I love that you didn't say "can't". The shortness of the sentence, comapred to the long one preceding it, conveying a hard and un-sum-uppable life. I love the Mulan I se in your writing, the way she beats Ting-Ting's husband "as a warrior and as a friend" - a lovely glimpse into her character. And the "two old women smile" line is beyond perfect. I also love the "the old man that was once her lover and is now, again, an honourable man." (Oh, beta-ish comment lest I forget: should be "who was once her lover". Will sound better.) The "again" between the two commas slays me - it hints at a wealth of stories left untold. So I'm reminded again of why you're on my favourite author list. Wow. |
