mq 2009-10-28 . chapter 213 great story love the way it's different and the same at the same time. |
Elf Princess 2009-10-12 . chapter 240 This story was fantastic! I found it while searching for Obi Wan/Padme fics and ended up reading all 240 chapters within two weeks. I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.
What I liked most was how profound this story was. I loved how central family was to this story, because that's the way I feel life is (or should be) for us as well. I feel that reading this story has made me more of a star wars fan than I was previously. Thank you for sharing this amazing story. |
Sarah Cartwright 2009-10-06 . chapter 240First of all... I can't believe I read the whole thing... Second of all, I can't believe you wrote the whole thing!
Truly, it was wonderful. I really enjoyed it: I loved the themes of love, loyalty, and family and their influence on the Jedi Order. I love that Obi-Wan realises that he does not have to be a Jedi to serve the Force and I loved seeing him as a husband and father. He fits the role so well. (Although, in my mind I couldn't stop seeing Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor being called "grandma" and "grandpa".)
I also want to commend you on the effort and dedication you put into this story. Two years is a long time (I seldom put more than two months into a fanfic) and your work truly paid off. Every chapter was thoughtful and well written, nothing shoddy or out of character. I wish the real Star Wars had been like this. Thank you, for the time and hard work, and for this exceptional story. |
Jump Highly 2009-09-25 . chapter 240You've done a truly great thing with this story. I've always managed to cook up a pretty good rant in regards to the fact that Padme's attraction (and subsequent marriage) to Anakin Skywalker was nonsensical. But I had never pictures how that could change and yet the story be preserved. You have accomplished this beautifully, plus some.
It's somewhat difficult to process the epic sufficiently to identify strengths and weaknesses. I know a few elements (Mabba the Butt, for instance) felt overly corny, and that the year long delay in retrieving Han felt out of place given how quickly everyone else in the family was rescued, though I'll acknowledge the role of canon there. At times, you repeated introductory level information with too high a frequency (at least for someone who was reading it in one go, though presumably not had I read it over two years). And that's about as constructive as I can get on that front.
The strengths were numerous. I'll confess that I know the movies only, not the EU, but the hints of it this story gave me were compelling. You've woven this narrative through an incredibly complex framework and done it with startling effectiveness. Your additional characters, as well, felt incredibly real. Hardy, in particular, impressed me, as you forced the reader to live in and understand his tension, rather than simply letting 'the family' wash away the rest of his life. To jump far back it was also striking to see how Obi Wan dealt with his love for Padme in comparison to Anakin's canon actions - revealing his struggle to Qui-Gon and then Yoda, not to mention removing himself from the order before pursuing anything resembling a relationship with Padme. That process lends great strength to the assertion that there can be a proper way to deal with 'attachments' in the Order.
Stylistically, your use of 'visions' impressed me. Normally, I feel authors get too bogged down in the ability to write 'out of place', be it memories, dreams, visions, etc. You made such instances feel essential without overpowering the rest of the story. That's a rare talent. I also took great enjoyment out of your unconventional use of silver screen lines, such as Obi Wan's "I know" and the earliest reference to "there is another", to name just two. Again, that easter-egg-esque tactic could have been abused, and you kept it at just the right level.
I would say the scenes surrounding the destruction of the Jedi Temple are some of the most effective in the entire story. Incredibly well done.
You've also done an excellent job at given the non-Force sensitive members of the family unique and vital roles which alleviate any sense of their being second-class citizens, at least to the reader. Han in particular marks this tension well, as he is the most reticent, and yet, as you point out, in the end he has Jedi taking his orders. And, as always, Han's wildly endearing and great for a laugh. To name just one, the 'not legally' line near the end was grand.
Obi Wan and Padme's relationship serves as a wonderful backdrop for the entire narrative, anchoring the characters, but also having enough sense of history that you did not given them all the answers, only the starting place for finding them.
It was a wonderful, inspiring story, and I thank you for the time and tremendous effort you put into producing it. |
Arisa E Blake 2009-09-23 . chapter 240Oh, wow, I have no words, I'm dumbstruck! It was far the best fanfic, what I've ever found. I could praise it for an eternity, I love everything about it, every little pice. The old and the new characters, the conversations, everything! It's a huge work, almost a new saga - the One Path saga. I'd like to translate it to my mother language, hungarian, if you allow me. I know it's 240 chapter and it's gonna be a huge work, but I simply have to do it. I'm at university though, but I'll work hard, I promise. I hope you allow it.
With all respect: Arisa |
Jedi totallyNsane 2009-08-29 . chapter 240its over. I'm so sad.
This is an absolutely wonderful story. I cannot tell you how much I love it. The story is captivating, interesting, funny, and all the characters stay true to themselves throughout the entire saga. I admire your skill as a writer. Hopefully, I'll be able to write like this one day. I can't wait until you post The Kenobi Way. This is wonderful.
