Kiyoshi 2009-05-17 . chapter 1 Erm... the Giver couldn't see color anymore. He told Jonas that in the book. Anyway, I thought it was pretty good. |
Marth HEART Smallville 2008-12-07 . chapter 1Wow. That was actually pretty good. I liked it. |
victor 2008-09-14 . chapter 1 it's not to bad but it adds a depressing ending to "the Giver". try not to put murder scenes in a children's book!! over all not to bad |

sasquatch223 2008-03-23 . chapter 1It doesn't suck. I've been waiting around for a Giver ending since I read the story when I was 9. Don't ask. Finally, I've found it! It's really good, same as your Artemis Fowl fics, you really got the writer's style of writing down. Man, that sounds weird. Anyways. |
FreakyD45663 2008-03-14 . chapter 1we read the giver in school, i thought it was somewhat disturbing
good fic though |
xXChristineXx 2007-10-02 . chapter 1I thought it was pretty good and a good description of what happened when the memories came to the community. It was really descriptive and I could really see what was happening. |
J.A. Rolling 2007-07-30 . chapter 1Porpierita takes on the challenge of writing a Chapter 24 for Lois Lowry's dystopian novel, The Giver. Porpierita starts the story where Lowry left off: The Giver is left in the Community while Jonas is escaping to Elsewhere with baby Gabe. The Giver is waiting for Jonas to travel far enough away so his memories will be released to the Community. In Porpierita's continuation of the plot, at the break of dawn the memories are released- the bad first and then the good. Supporting characters from Lowry's original- The Giver, Asher, and Fiona- all recall horrible, frightening memories and then beautiful ones. The Giver finally sinks to his knees to ask forgiveness for wishing painful memories on the Community and is answered with happy memories and a feeling of contentment.
Although Porpierita does not have much confidence in her work of FanFiction, "I know it sucks. No need to tell me. Ah well, who cares, it was for school anyways...Even though it was bad, please review!" I believe that she is selling herself short of her potential as a young author. Porpierita cleverly continued Lowry's technique for italicizing new memories learned by "receivers." This small touch helped to carry on the original author's tone and helped the reader experience a sense of continuity between the two works.
The fact that the author also used details of the characters and setting from the original work, also made "Chapter 24" somewhat believable. The story opens with The Giver standing by his window overlooking the community, from the same spot he and Jonas experienced so much together. Asher discovers his first painful memory outside The House of the Old. Fiona experiences a beautiful memory of a rainbow.
Porpierita's work could be extended to include more of the characters from the original. It would be interesting to read about what memories Jonas' family and the Elders were receiving. The order of events in the plot are also a bit miscued- Fiona receives the happy memory of a rainbow before The Giver sinks to his knees to ask forgiveness. The mood of despair could be developed further to reach all corners of the Community, only until the feeling of joy, color, and love reaches down to each individual. I would love to see Porpierita develop this further and concentrate on the theme that, "love overpowers all." |
 anonymous 2007-07-27 . chapter 1 i loved the book
your epilogue was the same style as the book
ive seen very few fanfics of the giver of the same quality as yours
keep writing! |
luver of jellybeans 2007-07-08 . chapter 1Wow... Interesting portrayal of the memories. I didn't really expect them to be bubbles... In fact I didn't even know what I expected them to look like. :P Still... the bubbles were cool. =D Were they symbolic?
I also expected for everyone to receive the memories... Not single memories only going to one person. I understand, though, why Fiona received the colors. :D Did Jonas's feelings direct the memories?
Anyways, wonderful one-shot! I love the symbolism (like the darkness, and the auroras.) This is the first fanfic I've read of the Giver, and it's spurring me on to read more!! |
Miss D 2007-07-04 . chapter 1 WOW! what a great story! I read this book with my students and I would love to read them your extra chapter. You were very descriptive and stuck to the author's own style...but why only good memories for Fiona? and I do agree, the Giver's dark past is great! I hope you received a good mark on this asisgnment :) |
Natsushi 2007-06-14 . chapter 1I liked it a lot. Brought me memories of 8th grade (last year). I think it flows with the story quite nicely. Nice touch with the Giver having a 'dark' background! |
