Ark Navy 2009-07-05 . chapter 16I started reading Timeless in December of 2008. As any avid reader is well aware, there is a hierarchy on how to go about reading stories based on how much the reader likes it. There's the, "Oh, this is pretty good. I'll read it now and then." followed by the, "Wow! I'm going to read every chance I get!" topped by the infamous, "I'm not doing anything until I read this." then topped by the most elusive level of, "If I read all of this right now, I can't spread the joy out." Which, let me tell you, takes a logical mind and a unfathomable amount of self-control.
I finished the story the fourth of January 2009, if memory serves correctly. Can you guess which of the aforementioned tiers this story was placed under? :)
Regardless, when I first started reading, the second person narrative made me highly skeptical it would turn out to be decent--I had set my bar down to mediocre, even. But probably part way through the second or third chapter... I started to realize, actually, how well the use of second person worked with this kind of story. After a while, the pronouns didn't even pop out anymore, but seamlessly bound the story together, letting the readers' eyes gloss over the subject instead of having them continually hurdle and stumble over constant switches between names, he, she, him, her. Needless to say, I was shocked. It was certainly an unorthodox approach to something that had been thought to be fully mastered and satisfied by first- and third-person views. Prior to this, I honest-to-goodness thought nothing good could come out of second-person besides "Choose Your Own Adventure" books and filthy fantasies that anyone can jump into. I could go on and on about this aspect alone, but I have other topics to cover, so I think I'll move on now.
Part of the reason why I'm only reviewing now--what, six months after the fact--lies in that I couldn't truly wrap my head around the plot. By that, I mean, in layman's terms, thinking this story up, from start to finish, must've given you a headache strong enough to cause an earthquake! Yikes. My knowledge of the series as a whole is horribly lacking (with only Four, Umbrella Chronicles, and bits and pieces of Two and One under my belt), so I can only assume anything not directly mentioned under any of the titles is something you came up with (such as S Corp, The Organisation, etc.). So to develop it, tie it into the story and allow it to kind of take on a life of its own while still being able to reign in its leash when the plot so deigned must have been a daunting task, to say the least.
Moving along, I thought you captured both characters almost effortlessly. Here and there I had some questions on Ada's judgment, but that might also be because my knowledge of her from /both/ games she's appeared in is atrociously lacking. But what really hooked me was the jagged development of their relationship. Up and down, backward and forward, yet somehow always ending further along the path. Very realistic. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget the night in the backalleys of Chicago, just the same as as their 'date' in the ice cream parlor and to see Little Shop of Horrors. I'm both happy and frightened to say that this story has impacted my mind so much on the pairing of Ada and Leon that I seriously wonder if I'll ever be able to write them on my own, without taking them down a familiar road learnt by way of Timeless... It's a disturbing thought.
...Along those lines, we have Chapter fifteen. The chapter that broke all our hearts and left not a dry eye. ...I can't stress enough how much I /loved it/. Call me crazy, but it seems as if fanfiction authors are afraid to kill characters off in fear that the readers will rebel against them, or they just can't bring themselves to do it. Bravo, Ada Adore. I wholeheartedly applaud you for having the strength to tear Leon from the story at the moment we needed him most. What's more, any cynical, heartless storyteller can finish a story by sending a beloved character to their early grave, leaving the readers to sit, gape, mourn and grow angry at the author for toying with their emotions. Thank God that's not how you chose to end it. It goes to show that even through the worst of tragedies in life, time keeps its steady beat and life goes on. (Pardon me for using the motif.)
In order to write this review after about six months of basically being speechless, I had to go back and re-read the last chapter, to refresh my memory. I knew what had happened, and so I knew what was coming, but... I still got chills when I read the last line, "You are together for as long as forever will last." Some might say cheesy, but looking back on the angsty-bittersweet hell the readers/Ada were tormented to, I couldn't be happier with the way it ended. And this coming from someone who hates chickflicks/'happilyeverafter' endings to good stories more than... well, a lot of things. Let's leave it at that.
So, in conclusion, I have to say that this has got to be one of the greatest fictional stories I have ever read. Period. And I realize those words can float around and not mean much of anything, especially over the internet, but I assure you I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it. Timeless has forever stolen my heart and warped my vision of AdaLeon and the Resident Evil series as a whole. So I just want to thank you for taking the time to write, and complete this wonderful story. Without it, I think I wouldn't have given Four a second look after the first time around, and the Resident Evil series would have thereafter been dead to me. So thank you for keeping their story alive... even if it meant killing both characters.
But that's life. And that's just how you portrayed it.
Cheers. That we may all find an 'ending' as perfect as this. :) |
doragon no mizu 2009-04-25 . chapter 16Ah, so /this/ is what my two closest friends have been raving about the past week or so.
I'm really happy I found time to read it, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The end was really cute, but most of all I appreciated your knack for details. Awesome job! |
Kimna 2009-04-04 . chapter 16The wet, wadded up tissues around me is evidence to my sobbing as I read the last chapter and end to this incredible story, but nothing tangible, maybe save wild hand gestures, could possibly show you how... how... moved and impressed and just mind-blown I am by Timeless. It's so amazing, I told myself I HAD to review as soon as possible as I'm wiping away the last of my tears to capture that "immediate response" train of thought.
Right when Ada looked out that window and I read the name "Riverside Motel" is when the the scrambling for tissues blindly began because I couldn't take my eyes off the screen even as they're watering up. It's so appropriate and perfect that that's where Ada finds herself after the immediate darkness. How important you've made that place is genius-! I can not praise you enough. It's the setting we see in the prologue for nine whole chapters. When Ada and Leon part ways, the "flashforewards" cease, which only signifies how symbolic the motel room is in their relationship. And at the end of Chapter 12, when we've gone full circle, everything falls into place. Omigawd.
Right after your author note then, I went back to Chapter 1 and read the same words again. I noticed two things: how you cut the scene short the second time around. In turn, it made me focus on what you DIDN'T repeat and how more meaningful the section's last line, "as he reaches for you and you’re timeless once again," becomes after reading the majority of the story at that point. I had felt pretty good about myself for understanding the story's title, but good gawd- the ending. Blows the earlier conception out of the water. Timeless!? Oh my gawd! That's what they are! What/where/when/how they end up. Timeless! I am in awe of your masterful storytelling.
Not just with the unique second-person point of view (which was admittedly... different at first, but really grew on me), to the characterization, and sleep depriving plot, but everything- even flawless formatting! Though taken for granted most of the time, I know everyone appreciates the easy-on-the-eyes spacing and appropriate bolds and italics put where they are.
I adore Leon and Ada's interaction that was, to me, lacking in both games they were in. All the feelings and history that is supposedly there and couldn't have been expressed in cut-scenes were captured by you instead. The dialogue felt real and RIGHT. As for the storyline? Above and beyond. This was a fic that didn't just feature Leon and Ada and their relationship. It can be a whole direction and scenario for what could come in the RE future! The double-agent aspect and different organizations involved... By the time things starting falling into place to understand what Wesker had in plan for the Trinity Virus (very clever, that name), my head was spinning with information and astonishment that you've managed to weaved such a complex plot.
With that said, I really did enjoy the ride. I don't think I've cried as much as I did this time around before- reading a fanfiction. It's usually a certain line that pulls the heart strings and wells up a few tears. But gosh- that last chapter had me going even after I read THE END, which was just... unexplainable to me because it was obviously a happy ending but I was still crying! xD I know, odd indeed. So hands down, your Timeless is unforgettable. Recruited me onto the bandwagon too! I can't even begin to think about a Leon not with Ada or visa versa.
One thing's for sure though, I am ecstatic is find that you have many more Resident Evil stories in your repertoire. I know it's been a while, but I thank you for writing such an amazing story and I look forward to reading what else you have. Keep up the great work! |
Jacyndaisawesome 2009-04-02 . chapter 2This is really good.
I dont read much fanfiction anymore.
But this is really, really good :D |
redxlotus 2009-03-30 . chapter 16 Oh my God, I can't believe you actually made me cry. You're an amazing writer, and I don't say that lightly. Crap, you're freaking good at pulling heartstrings. I'm still blowing my nose. Seriously. |
warha 2009-03-24 . chapter 16It is difficult to decide which I like better, Timeless or Hope/Faith. Perhaps Timeless if only for the reason that as of the moment of this review you have yet to post the ending to Faith (which I hope to all that is good that you eventually finish).
I found the story written from the perspective of Ada in the second-person a little difficult to grasp at first. I am not sure if it was just my unfamiliarity with this type of perspective or the simple fact that it took a chapter or two for you to grow comfortable writing in such a style, but early on your prose seemed slightly disjointed from what I had become accustomed to in Hope/Faith. Whatever the case may be, a large majority of the story flowed with the rhythm and pace that I have come to expect from your stories. I would definitely consider this a successful experiment if indeed that is the case.
The sheer force of your words are awe-inspiring, deep, and satisfying. The skill with which you turn a phrase leaves me breathless as I sit in wonder of what your mind has wrought. I am utterly impressed by your command of language and vocabulary--the likes of which are hardly ever found on sites like these. You have a gift that is beautiful and I am honored to have caught a glimpse of the passion that drives your creativity. And the same goes for Hope, Faith, and any other story you decide to affix onto that continuity.
Thank you again for such an amazing read and best wishes on future writing. |
Happyphantom 2008-08-23 . chapter 16I loved this story. It's very well written, which is already rare in the world of fanfiction. I still am in the process of reading it; I took little bits here and there, before getting seriously interested into it and I always liked what I was reading. Not very often are stories written from Ada's point of view, people seem much more interested in Leon's. I never liked much Ada's character. By the time the game ended, I wanted to use the rocket launcher to fire at her instead of Saddler. But I love this Ada. You really added a lot of depth to her. |
 Xsoemwhere we may meet againX 2008-03-12 . chapter 16speechless... god... I... I... U... I...
I... Argh I luved it even though u killed Leon... I luved it.. I'm just speechless... if you get time... just mail me;;
I... want to talk to person like u...
lost for words. |
 Green Macadamia 2008-02-02 . chapter 16... I'm speechless.
... Not really. I have prepared a rant, though no words that I say or would even dare to make up would do this story justice.
*Ahem* First off, yay for happy endings! :D *happy dance* I'm glad it wasn't a sad ending because sad endings make me... well, sad. I don't like being sad :[ I like happy endings :]
Anywho, this was just simply freakin' awesome. Seriously. I was astounded by the intensity and just how real it was. I'm moved by this. It was absolutely wonderful and brilliant. I really love how you describe things and your writing style and am envious of both ^.^ The second to last chappie almost brought me to tears... and I do not cry or even come close to it. Incredible. I thank thee for writing such a freakin' amazing story. I'm so glad that I was able to read it.
It's pretty late now. I've been up most of the night reading this. I couldn't take my eyes off it until the very last word pretty much. Now that I am done, I can sleep. Thank you again.

Piph 2008-01-23 . chapter 1I must admit this was the first time I'd read something that was written entirely in the second person point of view and it took me a couple of chapters to 'get comfortable', but as soon as I got used to it I was able to enjoy this fabulous fanfiction you wrote. Let me say the last couple of chapters were quite hard for me to read - my eyes were blinded by the tears. I thought the whole ending was so cruel - and I hadn't seen the first death coming so that was quite a shock. I did love it though. I really liked your take on Leon and Ada's characters. Mine differs from yours, obviously, but you made each of their actions and decisions seem natural for them. The story flows nicely and once you've started reading you simply cannot stop. Not once while reading did I stop to say 'uh, no. just no.' or 'that's so wrong!' - like I said, it's a scenario that's probable in the world of RE as we know it at the moment.
I meant to post a review a bit earlier, as I read your fic last weekend, but got caught up with uni works and all. So yes, I loved your fic.

Now I have Hope, then Faith to read. That should keep me from working on my many uni essays! ^-^ |
Richard 2008-01-21 . chapter 16 wow simply wow. fantastic story from beginning to end and you managed to make even me shed a tear in the final few chapters. great story well done two thumbs up |
Agent Ada Kennedy 2007-12-27 . chapter 1Wow. Simply, wow. Your story is so amazing...and your writing style...so simple yet extremely effective. This is the first story I've read that has the second person, I always doubted that it would be a good way to tell a story but you have proved to me that it is just as good as first and third person! Your story is great, it really is. And there aren't a lot of good stories out there that do Ada and Leon their complicated justice. Please write more, I will continue to rabidly read everything you write :D Oh and I read your profile and saw that you like Scrubs. YAY SCRUBS AND DR. COX! |
Diorelli 2007-12-27 . chapter 1I'm rereading this for the second time and I still can't believe I'm blown away as much as I did when I read it for the first time.
The other reviewers are pobably more eloquent than me in saying how beautiful, poignant and bittersweet this piece is. Thank you for writing it and I look forward to your next piece with anticipation. |
Agent Ada Kennedy 2007-12-16 . chapter 10Holy crap this story is amazing! Seriously, you utilized the second person point of view perfectly, I've never read a fic like this. It's great! I look forward to reading all of your works! |
