I'm not terribly familiar with the old series, but from what I've seen of him, you got the characterization spot on. I'm a little disappointed that it only goes up to the end of season 2, but I can definitely understand wanting to cut it off there (and the Brigadier wanting to cut it off there, as well). I'm adding this to my C2, the Tin Dog.
