Pyrastra 2008-09-12 . chapter 12Intentional or not, I think the many ironies and parallels make this story utterly amazing; it deserves more attention than it's been given. But alas, Merope/Tom is a rather obscure couple; hardly anyone would enter these two characters as a criteria for fiction (although I do think the 'obscure' couples like Merope/Tom Sr or HGTR deserve more limelight. Other couples like DG and LJ are written so much that they basically became the variations of the same plot, sometimes so small that readers can't tell apart two stories).
I always thought Merope deserved better; it shouldn't surprise anyone that she became the minor character I empathize the most with. In your story, Merope was a plain girl who had nothing in life. A husband who deserted her, a family who abused her, and in the end, a child who turned evil. She was reincarnated as Lily; the girl who had everything. She was beautiful, successful and had a loving husband, as well as a son who eventually saves the world. This eerily echoes what Cassandra said; Life's Opposites. But one thing remained the same. Both Merope and Lily had undying devotion to their sons. One thing that struck me as **; Lily watched her 'son' (in a sense) try to kill Harry, her biological son. Rose became the grandmother of 'Merope'.
It's also quite funny how by poisoning Merope, the ministry achieved exactly the opposite of what they had hoped. Perhaps if they had let Merope live, she would guide her son in the right direction. But your story seems to have a theme of predestination, so no, whatever anyone does, the outcome will always be the same. It wouldn't matter if Merope had lived. Every character unknowingly contributed to the realization of Merope's visions; the conclusion they had desperately tried to avoid. Fate does have a way of finding you after all. I opened the link to your story trying to find one that would give Merope a happier ending (which would have to be AU), but I was pleasantly surprised. |
