Great story!! As soon as I saw the name Roland I immediately thought of the Gunslinger. I think he was a perfect choice. I also liked the way he was created. Ever since Hell House I've had Sam's words stuck in my head: Of all the things we've hunted, how many existed just because people believed in them. This was an excellent illustration of how they could make that concept work for them.

I'm with you. It worries me where they're headed with this in season three. I HATED that they had him make that deal. I don't think he would have done it. It nearly killed him (what his dad did).

Dean made such a huge argument against it in Crossroad Blues and broke down completely in Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things.

Dean wasn't dead when his dad made the deal. He was in a coma. Sam actually died. It would have been devastating for Dean to lose his brother but he wouldn't deal with demons. He knows better.

John was Dean's hero, and it nearly destroyed him knowing his dad died to ensure his life. It was far worse when he found out he was in hell. He didn't make the deal to get his father out of hell - so why would he do that when Sam WASN'T in hell?

I'm just very uncomfortable with it.

I didn't like it at all when it became apparent that John was in hell. It bothered me until he escaped in AHBL2. I actually felt relieved. It was a feeling that was tempered by the pit in my stomach after what happened with Dean.

Okay, okay...I'll get off my soap-box...

This is well written and creative. I'm glad you wrote it. It makes me feel a little bit better and nobody had to give up anything in exchange.

This is one of the most creative fics I've read about how Sam gets Dean out of his deal. And I like that you used Roland of Gilead--one of my favorite literary characters, who makes a perfect "Patron Saint of Hunters." I think that the whole archangel device is overused in SN fics anyways, so Roland was a much better choice.
